m Jane FIELD 1738

Joseph was baptised in the parish of Hampton Gay in 1708, but became a blacksmith at Cuddesdon some 12 miles away. He married Jane FIELD at Oxford St Martin when he was 30 and they baptised seven children at Forest Hill some 3 miles from Cuddesdon village. Probably they lived on the Cuddesdon side of the parish boundary with Forest Hill but nearer to Forest Hill church. Jane died in 1777; Joseph died 5 years later aged 74. They were both buried at Forest Hill. |

Joseph was
married in 1738 aged 28 and upwards, which gives a birth date of around 1710 or
earlier. Joseph lived in Cuddesdon and
baptised children at Forest Hill but there is no suitable baptism in either parish
although an Abraham PENDREY baptised two children at Forest Hill in 1702 and
1715. A suitable baptism however was
found at Hampton Gay, 8 miles from Forest Hill.

30Apr1708 Joseph s Isaac & Mary PENDERI
Joseph
named his second son Isaac so this appears to be the correct baptism. Some confirmation is given by the burial of
Mary, wife of Isaac, at Cuddesdon in 1751.
This must be Joseph’s mother, buried in her son’s parish. Little doubt therefore that this is the
correct baptism.
No other
children of Isaac & Mary found in IGI search, nor suitable C of Isaac. The m of Isaac & Mary was not found in
the Oxford m index
There was
another Joseph who married Mary TUBB at Oxford St Mary
Magdalen in 1739 and
baptised his family at Sandford on Thames, about 5 miles from Forest Hill. He was probably born 1700/20; so there
should be another Joseph baptism to find.
The Sandford Joseph however did not name any child Isaac; he may be a
1st cousin of Joseph the son of Isaac, and perhaps the son of Abraham.
Miriam
PENDREY-6 was baptised in 1751 at Forest Hill, dau of Joseph & Jane. A series of baptisms to these parents begin
in 1739 suggesting a marriage of about 1737.
There is no suitable marriage in Forest Hill, but the following was
found from the Oxford m index and in the index of Oxford Diocesan bonds

no burials of these Josephs found even though a third Joseph was baptised in
1747. Joanna PENDREY buried 17Jul1762,
possibly may refer to one of the earlier Josephs by error in
transcription. (Jo....)
B
11Jan1777 Jane PENDREY of Cuddesdon
B 8Sep1782 Joseph PENDREY of Cuddesdon
that these
are the correct burials is supported by the note that Jane & Joseph were of
Cuddesdon; it is safe to assume that the two Josephs baptised in 1739 and 1746
both died young; the age given for a later Joseph burial (1832 aged 85) shows
that this refers to the son born in 1747; he remained of Cuddesdon
