Jane was born in Montrose, the daughter of James, a perfumer, and christened in the Episcopal Church there. She had at least 5 brothers or sisters and the family moved to Aberdeen probably before 1823 and there she met Alexander STEVENSON, a cabinet maker and organ-builder. Jane and Alexander were married in 1834 at St Andrews Aberdeen, the Episcopal Cathedral, when she was 25. Two daughters were born in Aberdeen, but by 1837, the family was in London, where Alexander worked for the firm of Gray & Davison building organs. At least 3 sons were born in London before Alexander contracted TB and died in University College Hospital in May 1846 aged only 36. Jane stayed at their London home until after her daughter Rebecca was born and registered her birth in London in November 1846. She then returned to Aberdeen with her family of six, Jane the eldest only 12 when Alexander died. The two youngest were baptised in Aberdeen in December 1848. In 1851 she was living at 164 Gallowgate with her uncle James THIRD, but with only the two youngest children. She stayed at this address until 1871 when she was next door with her married daughter Robina DOWNIE, and the young daughter of Rebecca. Some time after this she moved to Govan Glasgow, near to her eldest daughter Jane, married to William WALKER. She died there in 1878 aged 68 of bronchitis and pneumonia |
