5 James RONALD c1770-1814

m Jean FAIRLIE 1794

James RONALD was a perfumer and hairdresser in Montrose.  He married Jean FAIRLEY there in 1794 and had at least 6 children.

James attended the Episcopalian Church of St Peter in Montrose where records commence in 1800 though there were RONALDs in Montrose at a much earlier date.  Jean probably died in 1812 and James in 1814, both buried in Montrose

BIRTH

James RONALD was married in Montrose 1794 so probably born around 1770  No suitable baptism has been found in the OPR; his children were baptised and married in Episcopal churches and it is probable that James was also baptised in an Episcopal church.  Very few RONALD records are in the Montrose OPR.  Two early burials and a marriage were found:

B25Apr1675 Anna RONALD, lawful daughter to umquhill Mr. Rot.RONALD sometime minister at Old Aberdeen, have ye best MC & bells, payed £6-6-8

B14Aug1676 John RONALD, present Dinnogild {Dean of Guild} in Montrose went to the shore in perfect health about eleven o'clock in the forenoon, was most suddenly overtaken in an universall palsie and departed this life the same night before nyn a clock. had ye best M.C & bells, payed £6-6-8

m 17Jul1737 John HUTCHEON in the parish of Dun & Janet RONALD itp contracted

Minute Books of the Episcopal church in Montrose from 1718 to 1842 are held by the University of Dundee.  However the name RONALD does not appear,. although a Baillie RENNALD was a meeting manager from 1718 to 1721.  This is surprising as James baptised children there from at least 1800 and James’ son James was a prominent member of the Episcopal church in Montrose; his burial record of 1874 notes that he was a member of the Vestry, Secretary of the Congregation etc.   This raises the possibility that James RONALD was a convert to the Episcopal church or more likely was a newcomer to Montrose.  Note that the Montrose Burgh Court Claims records run from 1724 to 1856 but have references to James only in 1799-1807

It can be deduced that James had a sister Jane who married James THIRD but the m is not in the OPR   The 1855 death certificate of James THIRD shows that he was married to Jane RONALD deceased.  James RONALD’s daughter Jane STEVENSON stayed with James THIRD when she returned from London c1847.  The death certificate also shows James THIRD had a nephew James RONALD who is almost certainly the son of James RONALD-5

MARRIAGE

The death certificate of Jane RONALD-4 states that her parents were James RONALD and Jane formerly FAIRLIE.   She was baptised at Montrose Episcopal church in 1809, daughter of James and Jane FINDLAY; two years later, Gordon RONALD was baptised the son of James and Jane FAIRLEY; these baptisms are preceded by a suitable marriage in the Montrose register:

m 11May1794 James RONNALD & Jean FAIRLEY both otp proclaimed

only two baptisms have been found, both at the Montrose Episcopal church of St Peter.  Seven other children have been assumed from burial or marriage records:

DEATH

James was already dead by 1833 as shown by daughter Robina's marriage; there is a suitable burial at Montrose:

B  1Jun1814 James RONNALD

No age given, but as the surname is relatively uncommon, and the date fits between the baptism of the last known child in 1811 and the date 1833, it is very probable that this burial refers to James-5.  Two years previously there is a burial of Jean FAIRLEY, which may refer to Jame's wife:

B 12Sep1812 Jean FAIRLEY

Son James stayed in Montrose, but 3 daughters married in Aberdeen after 1823, and son John was a shipmaster there in 1834.  It seems that most of the family moved to Aberdeen after James' death
