6 Susannah (Hannah) ROUSE
c1764--1844
|
|
|
|
|
m Robert KING 1786
|
|
|
|
Susannah was born around 1764, and is believed to be the daughter of Jonathon and Susannah ROUSE. Jonathon was a butcher in Kidlington and baptised three children there between 1749 and 1755. Susannah was born ten years later, but no record of her baptism has yet been found. When she was 20, Susannah had an illegitimate daughter Martha baptised in the nearby parish of Shipton-on-Cherwell, and she married Robert KING there two years later. Robert was a blacksmith of Bletchingdon. It seems likely that Robert was the father of Martha, but there is no confirming evidence of this. Robert and Susannah baptised eight children in Bletchingdon between 1789 and 1805, where she was often known as Hannah, rather than Susannah. Relations between her and her husband were not always good as in 1813 Robert was bound £20 to keep the peace with his wife. Robert died of consumption in 1820 aged 60 and was buried in Bletchingdon. Susannah outlived him by 24 years, living in 1841 with her married daughter Esther. She died of old age in 1844 aged 80 |

The death
certificate and 1841 census give Susannah (or Hannah) a birth date of
1764. The marriage licence of 1786 gives
her age as 22 and upwards, which also gives her a birth date of 1764 or
earlier. She was married at
Shipton-on-Cherwell, but there are no ROUSE entries in the Shipton register
besides the baptism of Susanna’s illegitimate daughter Martha, and her marriage
to Robert KING.
At
Kidlington, however, just two miles away, Jonathon & Susannah ROUSE
baptised three children between 1749 and 1755, including Hannah in 1755. This Hannah married John HANWELL at
Kidlington in 1784 so cannot be Susannah-6.
As ROUSE is a relatively uncommon name however, it seems possible that
Jonathon & Susanna had a daughter named Susannah in 1764 in addition to the
three known children. On the other
hand, Susanna ROUSE (the mother) was born in 1716 (see
Susannah PEESLEY) so would have been 48 in 1764. It is possible
that she had a daughter at that age, but confirmation is needed.
If the
baptism took place in another parish, it should not be far from Kidlington, as
Jonathon & Susannah were at Kidlington in 1755, also when their daughter
Hannah married there in 1784, and they were buried there in 1800/1804. Susannah’s baptism has not been found at
Hampton Poyle, Hampton Gay, Rousham, Shipton-on-Cherwell or Woodstock.
?Susanna b c1764 d Jonathon & Susanna ROUSE?
Another
Susannah ROUSE baptised children at Alvescot between 1726 and 1746; one of
these named Susannah (C1737) married Moses MARCHANT at Alvescot in 1762; no
evidence that any of the sons had a daughter Susanna and Alvescot is 15 miles
from Hampton Poyle
Susannah ROUSE baptised an illegitimate daughter named Martha at Shipton-on-Cherwell in 1784; two years later, she married Robert KING and her daughter Martha took the surname KING (see Martha KING-5)
The
marriage was by licence issued by the Oxford Archdeaconry, and the marriage
took place at Shipton-on-Cherwell:

her mother was Susannah ROUSE

there is
no other Robert KING baptising children at this time in Bletchingdon or Shipton
and it is assumed that Hannah and Susannah KING are the same person. The original Bletchingdon register has been
examined but the writing is very clear.
However Hannah & Susannah can be confused in transcription (upper
case H appears similar to two long s with something in between) possibly also
confused orally if the s is pronounced quietly.
