BIRTH

Jonathon ROUSE was married at Hampton Poyle in 1747 aged upwards of 26 and died in 1800.  A birth date around 1720 is therefore expected.  Only one possible baptism was found from IGI:

C 18May1719 Jonathon s William ROUSE at Bicester

Bicester is 7 miles from Kidlington, 6 from Hampton Poyle on a direct road, and the unusual forename and surname leave little doubt that this is the correct baptism.  Two different Williams baptised children at Bicester from 1707 to 1723. Some spelt ROSE, some ROUSE.  If these are separated, the following is obtained:

m      1706 William ROSE & Marjory WEST at Bicester

m 25May1707 William ROSE & Eliz ABSOLOM at Stanton St John both otp

C 13Apr1707 Elizabeth ROSE

C 18Nov1708 Sarah

C 12Aug1711 William

C 30Dec1713 Thomas

C  6Jun1716 Jane

C 22Dec1707 William ROUSE

C 27Sep1709 Nathaneel;  m 1730 Hannah WIGGES

C  6Feb1710+John

C 14Feb1711+Thomas

C  1Apr1714 Samuel

C 13Dec1715 Hannah

C 23May1718 John

C 18May1719 Jonathon

C 12Apr1721 Anne

C 17Feb1723 Benjamin

from Fleet Prison register, London:

m 19Nov1706 William ROUSE tanner of Bicester & Ann PAINE (PRO GR7/18)

OXF marriage licences:

L 30Jul1730 Nathaniel ROUSE of Bicester, panner & Hannah WIGGES of Bicester, widow; at Bicester; bond: Samuel x WING (Archdeaconry Bond)

L  3Apr1738 Thomas ROUSE of Bicester, chandler, & Mary NORGROVE of Chipping Norton at Bloxham (Diocesan Bond)

OXF quarter sessions:

24Oct1718  Quarter Session: John PAYNE of Bister blacksmith, Gul ROWSE deceased[?] tanner, Gul TANNER of Wendlebury all bound £20

21Feb1767 William ROUSE of Bicester admon to Thomas ROUSE lawful son, Ann ROUSE widow renounced her right of admon [refers to son William?]

There are thus three known possible marriages of William – At Bicester, Stanton St John, and the Fleet.  The Fleet marriage and the 1718 quarter session record probably refer to the same man, a tanner; if he married at age 18 then the admon in 1767 also could refer to his death at age 79 (unless the 1718 q.session record is correctly read as “deceased”).  This seems the most likely interpretation at present.  Concerning the two ROSE marriages, either Marjory WEST died and William remarried Elizabeth, or the Stanton St John marriage refers to a different man.  However, he was not noted as a widow at Stanton, and there are no baptisms there

there are two Ann burials at Kidlington but these are really too late for the Ann who married at the Fleet

MARRIAGE

It is presently assumed that Susannah ROUSE-6 was born about 1764 the daughter of Jonathon & Susannah ROUSE who baptised three children at Kidlington from 1749 to 1755.  The baptisms at Kidlington are preceded by the following marriage at Hampton Poyle, two miles from Kidlington, and a license in the Oxford Diocesan Court:

L 12Sep1747 Jonathon ROUSE of Kidlington butcher 26Aug and Susan STRINGER widow of Hampton Poyle at Hampton Poyle

m 30Sep1747 Jonathon ROUSE & Susannah STRINGER by licence at Hampton Poyle

DESCENDANTS

from Kidlington register:

C 19Sep1749 Jonathon s Jonathon  & Susanna ROUSE; m 21Jan1790 Jonathon ROUSE & Elizabeth WATTS licence; B1837 Kidlington aged 88

C 23Nov1751 Anne     d Jonathon  & Susanna ROUSE

C  3Apr1755 Hannah   d Jonathon  & Susanna ROUSE; m 22Jul1784 John HANWELL & Hannah ROUSE licence

It is believed that at least one other child was born, Susannah, about 1764.  The Kidlington register seems complete, so baptisms may have occurred elsewhere in the period 1756-1764; no other children found in IGI parent search.

Diocesan Court marriage licence:

L 10Jul1784 John HANWELL wid of Kidlington baker & Hannah ROUSE of Kidlington 26au [b<1758] at Kidlington

Archdeaconry Court m licences

L 13Jan1790 Jonathon ROUSE of Kidlington butcher bch 25au [b<1765] & Elizabeth WATTS spr minor consent of mother Elizabeth wid of Kidlington

L      1822 John ROUSE of Kidlington 20au minor with consent of Jonathon ROUSE his father, butcher,

& Mary Ann WILD 19au minor spr of Kidlington with consent of Martha WILD mother, widow

DEATH

from Kidlington register:

B 16Mar1800 Jonathon ROUSE

B  2Sep1804 Susannah ROUSE

no ages are given but the burial of Jonathon cannot refer to the son born 1749 as he and his wife Elizabeth continued to baptise children at Kidlington up to 1803; there is no other suitable candidate for the burial of Susannah, leaving little doubt that these burials refer to Jonathon-7 and his wife Susannah

OTHER

Jonathon and Hannah ROUSE witnessed marriages at Hampton Poyle, but they may be parents or their children

Susannah STRINGER (widow).

At present the first m of Susannah to STRINGER has not been found (no suitable m in OXF m index, IGI or VRI) but Samuel & Susannah STRINGER baptised a son Samuel at Hampton Poyle 4Aug1739 who is likely to be a son of the first m of Susannah.  If so, then a possible baptism of Susannah is at Hampton Poyle 3Nov1716 Susannah PEESLEY; this is supported by Jonathon and Hannah ROUSE acting as witness to two PEESLEY marriages at Hampton Poyle in 1778 and 1782. Moreover, there are two possible burials of Samuel STRINGER in the NBI:

B 1740 Samuel STRINGER of Hampton Poyle at Islip (2 miles from Hampton Poyle)

B 1746 Samuel STRINGER at Wood Eaton (3 miles from Hampton Poyle)

these may well refer to son and father
