NELLIE was born in 1908 in Limehouse where her parents managed
an oil and colour shop in Salmons Lane market. The family lived over the shop during the first world war and
Nellie went to the infants (1912-1915) and girls school in Dalgleish St just
behind Salmons Lane. She left school in 1923 aged 14 and was apprenticed to Hitchcock
and Williams, a clothing and furrier firm near St Pauls Cathedral to learn
dress making at 5/- a month. She
moved with her family to Manor Park in 1925.
Went to work via tram to Aldgate and then walked. Apprenticeship
finished about 1928 but there was no work at the end of it and she was
employed in a clothing shop in East Ham. She met Roderick STEVENSON at a Methodist Church and married him
in 1933. For a while they lived in
Halley Rd in a house owned by her parents-in-law and their daughter Jean was born
there the next year. For a while they
lived with the Rodericks parents, but relations between them deteriorated and
they moved to another house in London with her sister Alice, to Southend and
then to Shoebury around 1935 Soon after, they rented a new house in Ulster
Avenue, Shoebury, and Nellie began to take boarders for seaside holidays and
continued dress-making at home. After the war, they were about to move to a new bungalow in the
adjacent road when Roderick died of lung cancer. Nellie moved to the new house and began work as a machinist in
a clothes factory in Leigh. Near
there she met Edward HAYNS a widower, who she married at Shoebury about
1960. Edward died in 1988 and Nellie
lived alone for a further five years before she died of pneumonia in hospital
after a short illness, aged 84. Nellie was a very forceful character who liked to get her own
way, and she generally did, insensitive to other's needs. Not for nothing was she nicknamed
"Bullock" in her younger days.
She tended to see those around her in black or white - angels or
devils - and they often progressed from the first category to the last. This included her siblings with whom all
connections were broken at the time of her mother's death. She had long rowed with her nearest sister
Rose whom she despised for "putting on airs and graces". She had a hard time during the depression
years when her husband had difficulty in finding work; her best times were
just after world war-2 when, with her husband's inheritance, they were among
the very few in the road to have a car and television, which neighbours came
in the evening to watch. A favourite
story is that in her last year, she was moved from hospital to a nursing
home, where she stood on a table with a knife in hand and tried to lead the
others to escape! |
