Thomas was born in 1878 in Bethnal Green where his parents managed an oil and colour shop. He followed his father into the trade occupying various addresses in Bethnal Green. Shortly after marrying Alice MANSFIELD, he became a manager of a shop in Salmon Lane market, Stepney. The shop, like his father's, was one of a chain owned by a Mr Williams. Six children were born while the family lived over the shop. Thomas joined the army about 1916 and served on the Western Front as a sapper while Alice looked after the shop and the children. After the war, Thomas continued as manager of the shop until about 1922 when the chain of shops closed. Thomas and Alice moved to Manor Park with their family, living in a house owned by Thomas' brother Samuel. At this time he worked in a tobacconist shop in Leman Street. The house was bombed in the second world war and Thomas and Alice moved to Dover Rd, Wanstead to live in their daughter Rose's house. Alice died of pneumonia in 1961 and Thomas died of the same cause just four months later, aged 82 Tom was a gentle likeable man, devoted to his wife Alice who was a much more forceful character. As manager of the shop in Salmon Lane, he was a respected local figure, well educated, and always willing to help. A story is told that in the early days of the 1914-18 war, a riot took place in the Lane against a German-owned shop but Tom was able to lead the family to safety around the back. he played the clarinet in a church band. I knew him when he was living at Dover Rd where he seemed content with life, and he passed on his chess set to me. |
