THOMAS was born in Bethnal Green in 1855, the eldest son of Thomas and Sarah; his father was a dairyman and kept cows at the family home in Hague St When Thomas was ten years old however his father gave up cowkeeping and started to work in a new oilshop close by, owned by a Mr Williams. Ten year old Thomas also started work there with his father. He was still working there aged 20 when he married Frances KILBOURN in 1876. Three children were born while Thomas and Frances lived at various addresses in Bethnal Green. In 1882 they settled at 306 Roman Rd over another of Mr William's oilshops on the corner of Armagh Rd, where another three children were born. Thomas became manager of the shop before moving to nearby Armagh Rd and then Cardigan Rd. Frances died in 1904 but Thomas lived another 15 years before he died in 1919 aged 63. He left all his money (£460) to his unmarried daughter Frances Beatrice. Frances bought a small hardware shop in the Roman Rd which she ran with her brother Sidney; this caused a rift with her brother Thomas as it seemed the money had gone to Sidney rather than to the eldest son Thomas. Thomas’ granddaughter Vi remembered him as a cyclic depressive but all the same a "dear old boy" who loved his cat; he had a problem with drink after his wife died. His granddaughter Rose remembered him as a short dapper man, very bald, with the top of one finger missing from a dog bite. Rose went to his house for safety during the anti-German riots which took place in Salmon Lane during World War 1. His granddaughter Nellie probably also went there and remembered an incident when the ceiling fell down |
