THOMAS was born in Bethnal Green in 1835, the eighth son of a
dairyman and became a dairy lad helping his father. His father died when he was 15, leaving the dairy business to
his Thomas’ mother. Three years later, he married Sarah CRANWELL and they continued
the dairy business in Hague St, Bethnal Green. His mother meanwhile opened a coffee house close by, no doubt
using the milk from the dairy. Nine
children (including twins) were born at Hague St between 1856 and 1869 Around 1866, Thomas gave up the dairy business to work in an oil
and colour shop. This was probably
because of an outbreak of cattle disease, which severely affected the East
End about this time. An oil and
colour shop next door to Elizabeth SHORT’s coffee rooms was owned by a Mr
Williams, who also had a shop in Chrisp St.
Thomas worked in both; he lived in Hague St. but in 1871 he was
lodging in Chrisp St next door to the shop.
By 1881, Thomas and Sarah had moved to Roman Rd, where Thomas managed
another oil and colour shop owned by Mr Williams Around 1885 they moved to 460 Old Ford Rd; Sarah died there two
years later of bronchitis aged 51.
Thomas lived to 1917 aged 81 continuing as an oilman and later as a
coal dealer in Bow. For at least ten
years he lived with James and Ann Stone and their family, though no
relationship is known. He died at 15
Wrights Rd Bow, and his death was registered by his eldest son Thomas. |

From
census, marriage and death certificate, Thomas was born about 1836 in Bethnal
Green son of William, a dairyman, whose wife was Elizabeth. No doubt therefore that the following

Thomas was probably recorded twice, once
at his home and again at his lodgings.
I have no other suitable Thomas and the Hague St Thomas was the first
known oilman in the family. Moreover, Williams owned both the oil & colour
store in Bethnal Green Rd, and another at 60 Chrisp St. Alfred YOUNG may be the
brother of Benjamin YOUNG who married Thomas’ sister Eliza and ran the coffee
shop in 1871 (see census below).
