|
m Margaret BLACK 1782
|
|
|
|
Francis was born in 1755 the son of a weaver in Mile End New Town. He became a weaver like his father and in 1782 aged 27 he married Margaret BLACK at Stepney, St Dunstan. Three children were baptised in Shoreditch while there were living in Moors Alley and George Yard. Five more children were then baptised at St Matthew Bethnal Green. Hand weaving was becoming an increasingly difficult trade to sustain a living because of competition from power looms, and in the 1790s, Francis was noted as a pauper. Francis died at Club Row in 1816 aged 61. Two years later, his widow remarried Robert HEBDEN at Shoreditch but nothing further is known of her life. |

C=Christened B=Buried
From his
age at burial, Francis was born about 1755.
He married in 1782 at Stepney St Dunstan when he would have been about
27. Francis is not a common name, and
there is only one suitable baptism in the IGI:
C
14Jun1755 St Dunstan; Francis s Thomas SHORT, Mile End New Town, weaver, and
Anne; 7 days
The good
fit with burial age, marriage at the same church, the same trade of both
Francis and Thomas, and Francis living at Mile End when he married, leaves
little doubt that this is the correct baptism
William SHORT-5
was baptised at St Matthew Bethnal Green son of Francis & Margaret. Five baptisms to these parents at St.
Matthew are preceded by three baptisms at Shoreditch St Leomards. The earliest baptism is in 1785, but the
date of birth was 28Sep1782. Three
months earlier is the following marriage:
m
30Jun1782 at Stepney St Dunstan after banns on 5,12,19Jun1782; Francis x SHORT
bch otp and hamlet of Mile End New Town & Margt x BLACK spr otp and hamlet
of Mile End New Town witness: John
TILOOR [? Tyler or Taylor?] R VAUGHAN [frequent witness]
Both
Francis & Margaret are relatively uncommon christian names, leaving little
doubt that this is the correct m; no other m of these names in IGI.

B

the burial
of Margaret SHORT has not been found, but there is a re-marriage of Margaret
two years after the death of Francis:
m
13Jun1818 Robert HEBDEN wdr otp & Margaret SHORT wid otp by banns; at
Shoreditch St.Leonard; wit: Joseph NASH, Ann x POVEY
Both
Margaret and Francis are relatively uncommon names, and the remarriage of a
Margaret SHORT, widow, 2 years after burial of a Frances SHORT gives confidence
that this is the right burial of Francis.
Burial of
Margaret HEBDEN not found, but a Margaret HEBDEN married William PRICE 9Jul1850
at St Lawrence Jewry and St Mary Magd Milk St; if she were 18 at first m, she
would be 86 in 1850! Could it be
her??
There are
several possible C of Margaret BLACK in London IGI:
C
9Jan1756 d James & Jane at St George in the East
C 24Jun1759 d James & Elizabeth at St
Ann Blackfriars
C 20Sep1765 d David & Margaret at St
Olave
C
3Feb1768 d Michael & Mary at St George in the East
none of
these look promising; not at Shoreditch or Stepney and fathers’ names not used
for Margaret’s children
