THOMAS was born in October 1715, the son of a weaver living in Mile End New Town. He became a weaver like his father and married Ann CHRISTIAN at the Fleet Prison and then at St Benet Pauls Wharf in London City in 1737 when he was 22. The probable reason for the clandestine marriage and the following marriage away from their parish was the imminent birth of their son Thomas. Nine children were born between 1739 and 1760 All were baptised either at Stepney St Dunstan or at St Matthew Bethnal Green after it opened in 1746. Thomas remained a weaver throughout this period. Nothing is known of Thomas or Ann after this time, though it is possible that Thomas remarried Sarah HARVEY in 1777 aged 62. |

Thomas SHORT
m Ann Christian in 1737 and fathered children up to 1760, so probably born
around 1710-1720. Possible Thomas SHORT
christenings found in London IGI and checked against original registers are:
C 20Jan1716 Thomas s Thomas & Ann SHORT;
Old Bailey B 15Jan1716
C 25Feb1721 Thomas s Thomas & Ann
SHORT; Chick Lane B 4Feb1721
assuming
the first Thomas died, the second Thomas would have been only 16 at time of m
to Ann CHRISTIAN
C 30Oct1715 Thomas s Thomas & Mary
SHORT Mile End New Town; weaver; 12 days
This
Thomas would have been 22 at m to Ann CHRISTIAN; this is a reasonable m age,
and the right parish, and both Thomas senior
and Thomas
junior were weavers of MENT, this must be the most likely christening
C 15Feb1701 Thomas s Thomas &
Elizabeth SHORT; barbican at ye G--; --tt- [hatter?]
This
Thomas would have been 36 at m to Ann
Failing
new evidence, the parents of Thomas are assumed to be Thomas and Mary of Mile
End New Town
The baptismal
record of Francis-6 at St Dunstan, names his parents as Thomas, a weaver of
MENT, and Anne. There is only one
suitable m in the IGI, and although this was at St Benets Pauls Wharf, both
bride and groom were of St Dunstan:
m 19Sep1737 Thomas SHORT bch of St Dunstan
Stepney & Ann CHRISTIAN spr of same parish at St Benet Pauls Wharf
Thomas and
Ann baptised a son named George Christian in 1749; using Ann's surname provides
good evidence that this is the right marriage.
The Fleet Prison
records however contain the following marriage
m 6Sep1737 Thomas SHORT of Whitechapel
Dean & Ann CHRISTIAN of Mile End New Town
It seems
almost certain that this is a prior marriage, even though the addresses are
incorrect, perhaps deliberately false. The
reason for this clandestine marriage may be the impending or actual birth of a
child later named Thomas (see Descendants).
There is no known connection between St Benet (near St Pauls) and the
prison (nearly one mile away in Farringdon St) so it seems they decided to make
sure with a regular marriage just two weeks after the Fleet marriage.

St Matthew
opened in 1746 which explains the change of church between Ann and Mary; it is
disconcerting that both Francis's were christened back at St Dunstan, but
failing other evidence it is assumed they are the same Thomas and Anne. Burials of first Ann and first Francis not
found in burial register of St Dunstan, though difficult to scan.
Thomas
SHORT who m Susanna LESERF in 1762 is probably another son of Thomas SHORT
& Ann CHRISTIAN since Thomas & Susanna also had a son named George
Christian. This Thomas was buried in
1814 age 78, giving a birth year of 1736, before the marriage of his parents. It seems likely therefore that he was the
reason for the clandestine marriage of Thomas and Ann, though no suitable baptism
of Thomas CHRISTIAN or Thomas SHORT has been found around 1737/8.

the
absence of ages from the St Matthew burial registers before 1813 makes a search
for the b of Thomas or Anne both difficult and almost pointless
it is
possible that Thomas remarried:
