The known
baptisms of Thomas-9's children occurred between 1687 and 1697. It is probable therefore that he was born
between 1650 and 1670 but could be earlier.
Possible baptisms from the London IGI are:
C
6Oct1633 s Thomas & Ellen, St Dunstan 54/64 yrs at C of children
C
8May1649 s Dudlea & Susanna, Allhallows Honey Lane, 38/48
C 27May1652 s Ringen & Elizabeth, St
Dunstan 35/45
C
3Aug1656 s Peter & Bridgett, St Mary Abchurch 31/41
C 21Sep1666 s Leonard & Mary, St
Bartholomew the Gt 21/31
C 26Sep1669 s Tho & Susan, St Giles
Cripplegate 18/28
C 26Oct1677 s Tho & Susan, St Giles
Cripplegate 10/20
only the
Ringen entry examined so far along with one other Ringen SHORT found in IGI:
C 10Mar1650 Jane d Ringing SHORT of
Kingstreet, mariner, & Elizabeth uxor, 7 days
C 27May1652 Thomas s Ringen ?HORT of Foxes
Lane mariner & Elizabeth uxor, 1 day
Writing in
register is very clear except for initial letter of SHORT in 1652; no other
Ringen found in IGI; possibly a foreign mariner with a name anglicised to SHORT. St Dunstan m index 1568-1696 had no Ringen
marriage
The
Thomas/Susan baptism can probably be eliminated as the first child Thomas
probably died before the baptism of a second Thomas in 1677.
Thomas
Short, citizen and clothworker of London made a will on 18May1669 leaving his
estate in equal parts to his wife Margaret and his son Thomas. The will was
proved on 28May. There is a possible
marriage of this Thomas at St Dunstan:
m 10Apr1626 Thomas Short & Margaret Wright
The Hearth
Tax for Tower Hamlets (undated c1670) lists a Thomas SHORTE with 9 hearths at
Christopher Alley. This number of
hearths indicates a relatively wealthy man so perhaps not a young one and it
seems possible that he is the Thomas who died in 1669, wealthy enough to make a
will
Their son
Thomas then would have been born around 1630, so is not Thomas-9, but may well
be his father
It is
presently assumed that Thomas-8 was baptised at St Dunstan in 1691, son of
Thomas, weaver of Pettycoat Lane and Jane. Other baptisms to Thomas and Jane
have been found starting in 1687, no suitable m of Thomas & Jane found in
St Dunstan m index, but there is one suitable m in IGI:
m
7Jul1686 Thomas SHORT & Jane WALBECK at Allhallows London Wall
the name
and date suggests that this is the correct marriage, but the register has not
yet been examined
