|
|
|
|
|
m Susannah WILSON
|
|
|
|
William was born at Elmstead Essex son of Hugh and Martha SIMONS. The Simons were farmers and William became a farmer also. He married Susannah WILSON in the neighbouring parish of Gt.Bromley when he was 22. They had seven children altogether; the first six were probably born in the Emstead/Bromley area, but then the family moved south to Hatfield Peveril. Another daughter was baptised at nearby Terling, but William died at an early age (about 40). His widow remarried in 1772 but had no more children. She died at Writtle in 1784 and her will mentions property she held in parishes near Elmstead to be sold and divided between her SIMONS children. |

The 1774
will of Hugh SIMONS of Elmstead establishes without doubt that Hugh was
William's father. William was married in
1751 and there is a suitable baptism at Elmstead in 1729 giving a marriage age
of 22:
C 29Jul1729 William s Hugh & Martha
SIMONS at Elmstead
Anne
Martha SIMONS-7 was born about 1760, daughter of William & Susannah
SIMONS. Although William was a farmer
in Hatfield Peveril, the will of Hugh SIMONS of Elmstead (25 miles away) proves
that he (Hugh) was William's father and there is a suitable marriage for
William & Susannah in the parish of Gt.Bromley adjacent to Elmsted.

Susannah's
will written in 1776 identifies her sons William & Samuel and her under-age
daughters Elizabeth, Polley wife of Thomas LUCKING, Ann-Martha, Catherine,
Sally. It is not clear whether William
& Samuel are also under age, ie born after 1755. The 1774 will of Hugh SIMONS, William's father mentions his first
grandson William and then his under aged grandchildren Elizabeth, Polly, Ann,
Catherine, Sarah, Samuel.
One
