Hugh was probably born in Elmsted Essex, about 1700, son of William SIMONS, churchwarden, farmer and landowner. Both Hugh and his father were appointed Freemen of Colchester. Hugh married Martha BURTON at nearby Lt.Bromley in 1722 and they had at least five children baptised at Elmstead. Hugh died in 1774, and his will shows that he was a relatively wealthy farmer of Elmstead |

According
to a descendant, (John Wenden SIMONS of 6 Parkwood Grove, Sunbury on Thames,
Middlesex TW16 6QW), Hugh was the son of William SIMONS 1669-1734 churchwarden
of Elmstead in 1707. Hugh was born
about 1700 probably at Elmstead, but the registers of that parish are missing
the years 1661 to 1729. No SIMONS
recorded 1558 to 1661
William
SIMONS-8 was baptised ar Elmstead in 1729, son of Hugh & Martha. There is a suitable marriage at nearby
