The SIMONS family were farmers and landowners, prominent members of the parish of Elmstead, Essex from at least the beginning of the 18C when William was appointed churchwarden at St Ann & St Lawrence. One of his sons, Hugh SIMONS, married Martha BURTON at Gt.Bromley in 1722 and was appointed freeman of the Borough of Colchester. Hugh's eldest son William married Susanna WILSON at Gt Bromley but then left the Elmstead district to become a farmer at Hatfield Peveril. William died before 1772 and his wife remarried another farmer, William SPEAKMAN of Terling. William SIMONS’ daughter, Ann Martha, married William SPEAKMAN's nephew, Francis SPEAKMAN at Writtle in 1778. |
