4 Elizabeth Mortlock SKINSLEY 1793-1871

m Matthew WENDON 1815

Elizabeth was baptised at Paglesham in 1793 and married Matthew WENDON there in 1815.

After marriage, Elizabeth 7 Matthew lived first in the parish of Southchurch where 8 children were born (3 died young), but around 1828, they moved to the Milton area of Southend where three more children were born.  In 1841, Matthew was an agricultural labourer living at Jail Farm in Barling (on the road to Sutton and Rochford).  They remained in Barling for the rest of their lives.  Matthew became a gardener.

In the 1861 census, Elizabeth was a nurse at the home of Joseph Brown, a farm bailiff.  (Elizabeth's grandmother was Jane BROWN, but there seems no relationship).

Their eldest daughter Elizabeth was an imbecile and remained with them until their deaths, afterward living with her sister Martha at Elim Cottages in Shoebury.

Elizabeth and Matthew both died of old age when they were nearly 80.  Their son Daniel of Wakering was a Methodist local preacher.

BIRTH

From the Family Notebook, the maiden name of the mother of Martha WENDON is given as Elizabeth Mortlock SKINSLY, and her date of birth as 29Sep1792.  Census returns give her place of birth as Paglesham, and there is a suitable baptism there; for further as proof that this is the right baptism, the mother's maiden name was MODLICK (see father’s records), clearly a version of MORTLOCK
