m Samuel KILBOURN 1848
|
|
|
|
Susannah was born in Gt or Lt Waltham about 1829 but moved to the East End of London and married Samuel KILBOURNE at Haggerstone in 1848. Samuel had buried his first wife, his only child and both his parents the previous year, but he had better luck with Susannah. Nine children were born to Samuel and Susannah in the next 20 years while the family lived at various addresses around Bethnal Green, initially in the Brunswick St/Birdcage Walk area, then to White St, and for the last 16 years in the Abingdon St area. Susannah died at 3 Abingdon St of peritonitis aged 48. One of her daughters was present and registered the death. Samuel lived for another 20 years |

From
census returns, Susannah was born c1829 in Waltham, Essex. From her m record, her father's name was Francis
Speakman SMITH, and these unusual christian names lead to a confident
identification of her father as the Francis Speakman SMITH baptised at
Gt.Leighs in 1806 and who married Susannah CORNELL at Finchingfield in 1827. Gt.Leighs is adjacent to Lt.Waltham, but no
suitable baptism for Susannah has been found in Gt or Lt.Waltham or
Gt/Lt.Leighs. The only possible baptism
found so far is at Braintree, on the same day as a brother Alfred

Susannah SMITH of Braintree, shoemaker
C 27Jul1832 Alfred s Francis & Susannah SMITH of
Braintree; shoemaker
Braintree
is some 5 miles north of the Walthams and on the way to Finchingfield. If this were the correct baptism, Susannah
would have been 3 or 4 years old. This
is supported by the baptism of a brother Alfred on the same day without any
note in the register that they were twins.
Further proof would be desirable, but it seems likely that this is the
baptism of Susannah. The family has not
yet been found in 41 census nor has Alfred been found in the 81 census index.
