BIRTH

John-9's children were born from about 1700 and he died in 1754.  His birth date cannot therefore be much earlier or later than about 1675, but no information is known.  He was buried in a quaker burial ground so probably not baptised in a parish church.  There is a baptism of John in 18Mar1673 at Gt.Waltham, but he was the son of the vicar, Benjamin SMITH and his wife Abigail – definitely not a non-conformist

MARRIAGE

John-8 was born around 1700, son of John & Jane.  There is only one suitable John/Jane m in Essex Boyd at Brentwood, but examination of the Brentwood register shows they were both from Horndon:

m 3Oct1695 John SMITH single of East Horndon & Jane BEERMAN single of West Horndon

the Horndon registers have not yet been examined to see whether any children were baptised there, but a move to Waltham seems unlikely

DESCENDANTS

Although no baptisms have been found, six descendants are known from wills and other information (see John-8).  Possible birth dates can be estimated from age at marriage or death:

John    1700;  known to be eldest brother of Peter

Abraham 1702;  m 1724 (age 21+); named next after John in Peter's will

Thomas  1704;  probably mar 1733, so born before 1712; probably bur 1782 age 80 so bc1702 but listed after Abraham in Peter's will

Jane    1705;  m1724 with parents consent, so probably between 18 and 20 at m

Mary    1707;  m1728 (age 21?)

Peter   1709;  bur 1784 age 75

m 14Apr1724 Samuel JOSLIN of Felsted & Jane SMITH of Waltham Magna declared intention to marry;

            consent of parents by verbal declaration of Jno SMITH of Waltham Magna and Jane  his wife (Thaxted Quakers)

m  9May1724 Samuel JOSLING & Jane SMITH at Thaxted  (IGI)

lic    1724 Abraham SMITH of Waltham Magna & Judith SKINNER wid     bond: Christopher LEACH

m 25Aug1724 Abraham SMITH & Judith SKINNER by licence at Gt.Waltham

m 18Aug1728 Thomas PETTIT of Chicknall son of Thomas PETTIT of Feering & Mary SMITH da of Jno SMITH of Waltham MAGNA;

            relations: John SMITH, Jane SMITH, John SMITH jun, Joseph SMITH, Samuel JOSCELIN, Jane JOSCELIN (Thaxted Quakers)

will 1748 Thomas PETTIT of Broomfield, farmer s 3Apr1748 p 29Oct1753...   I appoint my brother-in-law Peter SMITH of Lt.Waltham malster, executor.  [ERO 171 BR 24]

Related witnesses to Mary's wedding are all accounted for except Joseph who may perhaps be another son.  If so he was not mentioned in Peter's 1784 will, so could have died unmarried before 1784.  There is a burial of Joseph at Lt.W in 1780 with no added information; no suitable quaker burial found.

An interesting possibility is that he might be the quaker Joseph, yeoman of Gt.Waltham whose children were born between 1710 and 1722.  However Joseph is almost certainly the son of Henry & Abigail of Felsted, whose son John was born 1684-3-21.  It is just conceivable that this could be John-9 if he were married at age 20 (1704).  His first son John could then be born 1704 and second son Abraham born 1705 and married in 1724 aged 19.  However, this John almost certainly m Judith JESPER in 1727 (quaker), as John (of Saling Magna) & Judith had a daughter Bethia b1731, same name as a daughter of Henry & Abigail b1688.  A relationship with the Quaker SMITH family of farmers and yeoman seems very probable but has not yet been worked out

m      1733 Thomas SMITH & Sarah CORNHILL at Lt.Sampford?

Peter SMITH of Stonage bequeathed money to his sister-in-law Sarah "if she be living".  Sarah can only be the wife of Thomas as all other brother's wives are known.  The only possible Thomas/Sarah m found so far is at Lt.Sampford, 12 miles N of the Walthams;

burials from Quaker records of Thaxted meeting:

d  4Apr1782 Thomas SMITH labourer of Waltham age 80 [b1702]     B 7Apr at Stebbing Quaker burial ground

d 13Oct1784 Peter SMITH of Lt.Waltham farmer age 75 [b1709]     B14Oct at Stebbing Quaker burial ground

DEATH

There are suitable burials for both John and Jane in the quaker records, though they are noted as of Lt.Waltham, whereas all previous records were of Gt.Waltham; perhaps John inherited Stonage some time between 1728 and 1754.  A mortgage dated 21Nov1756 shows that Stonage was then owned by John HEATHFIELD of Croydon, but the occupier was not named, though Peter SMITH occupied other properties of HEATHFIELD.  John and Jane's quaker burials may indicate that neither were baptised:

from quaker records:

d 14Sep1754  John SMITH of Little Waltham buried 16Sep Stebbing

d 20Apr1756  Jane SMITH wid of John SMITH late of Little Waltham; buried 25Apr Stebbing
