Peter SMITH's 1784 will lists the following children of Thomas:
John and his wife,
William,
Joseph,
the wife of Joseph
TILFIN,
the wife of Robert
RICHARDSON,
Sarah HAMPSTEAD wife
of John.
He appears to be less
familiar with Thomas’ family than the others as two daughters are named only
through their husbands. Moreover he bequeaths
money to his sister-in-law Sarah "if she be living". Sarah can only be the wife of Thomas as all
other brother's wives are known. The
only possible Thomas/Sarah m found so far is at Lt.Sampford, 12 miles N of the
Walthams;

from Thaxted
quaker records
d 1782/2/4 Thomas SMITH labourer of Waltham age 80 [b 1702]; B7Feb
Stebbing (quaker burial ground)
So this Thomas had a son William and a daughter Sarah, but no sons John or Joseph C at Lt.Sampford; also a possible burial of Sarah in 1763 although Sarah’s marriage at a later date can be identified with confidence:
m 23Oct1759 Joseph
SAMS & Sarah SMITH at Gt.Leighs
m 31May1784 John
HELMSTED & Sarah SAMMS widow at Lt.Waltham
but the m of the other daughters to RICHARDSON and TI(L)FIN (WIFFEN?) have not been identified in the ESS m index. Robert RICHARDSON, farmer of Gt Leighs died in 1803 and his will mentions his wife Susannah. Time, name, and occupation suggest that he may be the husband mentioned in Peter’s will.
Possible records
relating to John son of Thomas are:
6Feb1773 John SMITH bch 38 of Lt Waltham farmer and malster & Jane
JOSSLYN spr 30 of White Notley (m licence)
m 9Feb1773 John SMITH single otp &
Jane JOSLING(JOSCELYN) single of White Notley; w: Thos MILLBANK, John KNIGHT at
Lt.Waltham
Jane JOSLING may be
John's quaker cousin, daughter of Samuel and Jane (nee SMITH) born 1725. This however would make her aged 50 at
marriage not 30. This may seem an
unlikely error but no children of John & Jane are known and the hypothesis
is strongly supported by a burial record at Stebbing quaker burial ground:
d 1777/8/24 Jane SMITH age 52, wife of Jno farmer of
Waltham; not a member; B28 Stebbing [b 1725]
the m licence gives
John a birth date of about 1735 just 2 years after the m of Thomas and Sarah CORNHILL. His burial may be recorded at Gt.Waltham in
Dec1800 (no age given). This is
supported by the Gt.Waltham register in which John Smith witnesses marriages in
a good hand from at least 1772 to the last seen on 9Feb1799. It will be very instructive to compare the
signature over this period with the signature on the two marriages of John in
1773 and 1775 and with the signature on John-7's will.
The burial of Thomas
has not been found. The Thomas SMITH
buried at Stebbing in 1782 left a will made in 1782 which shows he was not the
Thomas in the above tree, as he had under-age children Charles, Jane, Sarah and
a wife Ann
[2]
The descendants of Abraham are derived from his will, the will of his
son John, and parish registers:
1757 will of Abraham
identifies
son: Abraham
dau: Judah KEMP
dau: Mary
son: John
dau-in-law: Rebeccah
FRANKLING
younger children: Joseph & Abigail
1786 will of John SMITH of Broomfield (see John SMITH-7) identifies:
brother Abraham SMITH
sister Judith KEMP
sister Abigail STRUTT wife
of John STRUTT
sister Mary SMITH
niece Mary COOTE [COOK?]
cousin John SMITH of
Stonage, Lt.Waltham
[3]
From Peter SMITH’s 1784 will:
…and I also give for several good reasons to
Mary SMITH my now housekeeper and daughter of my now housekeeper Mary SMITH the
joint sum of £40…
From John of
Broomfield’s 1786 will:
…and for reasons of
bad usage I give unto Mary COOTE, daughter of my sister Mary SMITH one shilling
and to all her children one shilling a piece; I also for the like reasons give
unto my sister Abigail STRUTT wife of John STRUTT of Little Waltham one
shilling and to all her children one shilling apiece…
interesting to speculate
what Peter’s “several good reasons” were, and what John meant by “bad usage”
