6 William SOANES 1748-1833

spouse's records

m Miriam PENDRY 1780

William was born in Forest Hill in 1748 and spent most of his life there.  For a long period he was clerk of the parish.

When William married Miriam PENDREY there at the age of 32 however, he was living in the neighbouring parish of Cuddesdon.   William & Miriam returned to Forest Hill that same year (1780) and baptised all their seven children in the parish.

William still held the post of parish clerk when he was buried in Forest Hill aged 85.  Miriam had died eight years previously in 1825.

BIRTH

William was buried in 1833 aged 85, so born around 1748.  William was of Cuddesdon when he married in 1780 but there is no suitable baptism in the Cuddesdon register. William & Miriam spent all their married lives in Forest Hill, and there are three possible baptisms there:

C 26Mar1748   William   s John     & Mary SOANES  [aged 85 in 1833]

C  3Feb1742/3 William   s William  & Mary SOANES  [aged 90 in 1833]

C 10Jan1741   William   s Joseph SOANES (& Jane?) [aged 92 in 1833]

The first baptism seems most likely; this gives the correct age at burial and as William was a parish clerk, he is likely to have known his correct age. Moreover, ages at death are usually over estimated rather than under, as in the other baptisms; William had a son John but not Joseph.  These considerations are not conclusive but it will be assumed for the present that William was the son of John and Mary

MARRIAGE

Stephen-5 was baptised in 1790 at Forest Hill, son of William & Miriam.  There is a series of baptisms to these parents at Forest Hill beginning in 1780, but no suitable marriage.  The marriage is found in the neighbouring parish of Cuddesdon:

m 6Sep1780 William SOANES bch of Cuddesdon & Miriam x PENDREY wit:Daniel BLAKE; William BIGGES

Although William is of Cuddeson rather than Forest Hill, the unusual name Miriam and the correct date leaves no doubt that this is the correct marriage

DEATH

from the Forest Hill register:

B 19Jul1825 Miriam SOANES age 74 of Forest Hill [b 1751]

B 4Jun?1833 William SOANES age 85 of Forest Hill parish clerk [b 1748]

The unusual name Miriam and a suitable age at death giving an age at marriage of 29 confirms the burial of Miriam.  There is no other burial of a William between 1793 when their last daughter was baptised and 1833.  Since this burial also gives a suitable age at marriage of 32 it is assumed to be correct.

OTHER

William was the parish clerk of Forest Hill when he died in 1833 and was a witness at most marriages in Forest hill from March 1813 (when witnesses were first noted) to at least November 1820
