John SOANES was baptised in 1718 in Stanton St John, but his parents were living in the neighbouring parish of Forest Hill, which is where John lived and died.

In 1747 he married Mary LANGSTONE at Long Crendon, about 6 miles from Forest Hill; they baptised 12 children at Forest Hill between 1748 and 1767 but four of them died in infancy.

John & Mary are both believed to have lived to over 80 years of age. John was buried in Forest Hill in 1801, and Mary probably in 1806

BIRTH

John baptised his first child in 1748 and probably died in 1801. He would therefore have been born about 1720/30. The only baptism near this date in Forest Hill is on 7Sep1734, son of Joseph and Mary. This is really too late for a marriage before 1748. and none of John’s six children were named Joseph. There is however a suitable baptism in nearby Stanton St.John:

there is no confirming evidence that this is the correct baptism, but the register note that the parents were of Forest Hill, makes it very likely

MARRIAGE

William SOANES-6 was baptised son of John & Mary at Forest Hill in 1748. This is the first of 12 baptisms to these parents at Forest Hill from 1748 to 1767. The m would therefore have taken place shortly before 1748, but there is none at Forest Hill though the registers are complete at this time, nor in the Oxford m index. The following marriage allegation however was found in the Oxford Archdeaconry Court records:

the marriage was not found in the Brise Norton register, but the IGI has the following at Long Crendon about 6 miles from Forest Hill, which is clearly the desired marriage:

The burial of Mary aged 87 implies a birth date of about 1719, which is a suitable birth date for the wife of John. The burial cannot be tied to any known baptism of Mary at Forest Hill, but the register of Long Crendon, Mary’s birthplace, has not yet been examined.

OTHER

William was the parish clerk of Forest Hill when he died in 1833 and was a witness at most marriages in Forest hill from March 1813 (when witnesses were first noted) to at least November 1820
