8 John SOANES c1690-1743?

m Mary ALSOP 1716

John lived and died in Forest Hill and was probably born there around 1690.

He married Mary ALSOP from the neighbouring parish of Stanton St John in 1716 and they baptised their first child there.  Six further children were baptised at Forest Hill between 1718 and 1739 before John died in 1743.

Mary probably outlived him for 30 years

BIRTH

John married Mary ALSOP in 1716; at that time he was of Forest Hill, and he baptised his children there from 1720 to (probably) 1739.  A baptism around 1690 is therefore expected, but unfortunately the Forest Hill register is lacking the years 1680 to 1700.  The only previous baptism of John at Forest Hill or in the Oxford IGI is in 1663: C 14Jul1663 John s Thomas SOAN. This would give him an age of 53 at marriage, and although possible is unlikely.

Following this deficient period, the registers have baptisms to John in 1701-3, to William 1708-11 and to Thomas 1714-1727.  Since there are no baptisms to William between 1700 and 1708, and none to Thomas between 1700 and 1714, it seems likely that William married c1705 and Thomas c1712.  This leaves  John, father of Joseph and William, as the most probable father of John-8. The two baptisms to this John are:

C  2Nov1701 Joseph    s John SONES

C 19Sep1703 William   s John SONES

and it may be surmised that earlier baptisms of John's children took place in the deficient period between 1680 and 1700, including that of John-8.  In 1748 there was a burial of John and his wife Martha, and the most likely hypothesis at present is that John and Martha were the parents of Joseph 1701, William 1703 and also of John-8 around 1690.

MARRIAGE

John SOANES-7 was baptised at Stanton St John in 1718, son of John & Mary of Forest Hill.  This baptism is preceded by the following marriage at Stanton St John:

m  8Nov1716 John SONES of Forest Hill & Mary ALSOP otp

the register note that John was of Forest Hill leaves little doubt that this is the correct marriage

DESCENDANTS

from Stanton parish register:

C  3Aug1718 John s John & Mary SOANES of Forest Hill

from the Forest Hill register:

C 15Jan1720 Benjamin s John SOANS;  m 6Nov1744 Jane STEPHENS at Trinity College Chapel

C 11Aug1723 Thomas   s John SOANS

C  8May1726 Mary     d John SONES

C  5Mar1732 Ann      d John SOANS

C  1Aug1736 William  s John SOANS

C 20Apr1739 Susanne  d John SOANS

DEATH

John & Mary married in 1716 and baptised their last child at Forest Hill in 1739; after this come the following burials at Forest Hill:

B 13Apr1743 John SOANES

B  5Mar1748 John SOANS & Martha  his wife

the next John burial is in 1801 which is too late.  No marriage of John & Martha is known but it is suggested in the discussion above that they are the parents of John-8.  This leaves the 1743 burial for John-8 aged about 50.

Possible burials of Mary at Forest Hill are:

B  8Aug1773 Mary SOANES

B 21Oct1773 Mary SOANES

B 28Jun1798 Mary SOANES

and it seems probable that Mary died in 1773 aged about 75/80;  the parish register of Stanton St John has not yet been searched for her baptism.  Mary ALSOP is a common name, but no suitable nearby baptism has been found in the IGI.
