Ann Martha SPEAKMAN was baptised at Terling in Essex in 1779 where the SPEAKMAN family were prominent members of the parish. Ann Martha was the only child of the youngest member of the SPEAKMANs and her parents probably lived at Gt.Leighs where her father was a farmer. When Ann Martha was 20 she married a farmer, John SMITH, and baptised nine children at Gt.Leighs between 1801 and 1813. In 1796, John inherited properties on the Waltham to Braintree Rd, and at some time after the baptism of their last child, Ann and John moved to Gt.Waltham, occupying a property known as Scurvy Hall. They were there in 1841 living on their own, and Ann's aunt, Sally SIMONS, was living in the next property on the Braintree Rd. John died of dropsy in 1849 and Ann then went to live with her unmarried daughter in Bermondsey. Ann Martha died in Bermondsey in 1854 aged 75 but was buried back in Little Waltham. |
