7 Francis SPEAKMAN 1756-1813

m Anne Martha SIMONS 1778

Francis was baptised in 1757 at Gt.Leighs, the youngest child of John & Ann SPEAKMAN.  The SPEAKMAN yeoman farming family however was based in nearby Terling, and Francis was living there when he married Ann Martha SIMONS at Writtle in 1778.

Their only child, Ann Martha, was baptised at Terling in 1779 and in 1781 he signed the perambulation of the Terling parish.

Some time later however Francis and Ann moved to the neighbouring parish of Gt Leighs.  Francis’ wife was buried there in 1808 and in 1811 Francis was described as a farmer of Gt Leighs in the will of his sister-in-law, Ann HART.

Frances died in 1813 and was buried in Gt.Leighs aged 57.

BIRTH

From his age at burial,  Francis was born about 1756.  He was of Terling when he married in 1779 but was buried in the adjacent parish of Gt.Leighs. There is a suitable baptism at Gt Leighs:

C 13Oct1757 Frances s John  & Ann SPEAKMAN

Frances SPEAKMAN is not a common name and as further proof of this baptism, the 1813 will of William SPEAKMAN, farmer of Terling, mentions his brothers Robert, Francis and Thomas.  Baptisms of all brothers have been found also sons of John & Ann SPEAKMAN.

MARRIAGE

Ann Martha SPEAKMAN-6 was C at Terling on 31 Jan 1779 d of Francis and Ann Martha.  There is a suitable m the preceding year at nearby Writtle:

m 14Jul1778 Francis SPEAKMAN of Terling & Ann Martha SIMONS by licence at Writtle (the allegation was not found at ERO)

DESCENDANTS

from Terling register

C 31Jan1779 Ann Martha d Francis & Ann Martha SPEAKMAN

the admon of Francis states that Ann was his only daughter

DEATH

from Gt Leighs register:

B 10Jan1808 Martha Ann SPEAKMAN

despite the reversal of the usual forename order, there seems little doubt that this is the correct burial; right time, right place, and SPEAKMAN is not a common name

B 19Mar1813 Francis SPEAKMAN of Gt.Leighs 57 [b 1756]
