Thomas was probably baptised in 1661 at Hildersham in Cambridgeshire, the son of Robert and Frances, but his mother died the following year and his father re-married. Thomas married Hester about 1690 and baptised two children before moving to Finchingfield in Essex, about 14 miles from Hildersham. Thomas and Hester baptised six more children at Finchingfield. Thomas was a bricklayer and labourer until 1705 when he was described as a farmer. He was buried in Finchingfield in 1719 aged about 58. Hester remained for some years involved in parish burials by affirming that the deceased was buried in woolen as required by law at that time. |

Thomas was
married about 1690 so probably born between 1660 and 1670. Only one possible baptism has been found at
present, at Hildersham in Cambridgeshire.
C
17Oct1661 Thomas s Robert & Frances SPAKEMAN
Hildersham
is about 14 miles from Finchingfield where Thomas and Hester lived after their
marriage but a good road (Cambridge to Braintree) connects the two
parishes. Since Thomas had a son Robert
and a son or daughter named Frances, and bearing in mind that SPEAKMAN is a comparatively
uncommon name, this seems likely to be the correct baptism. Considerable support is given by the
probable baptism of Robert in the neighbouring parish of West Wickham, since he
was the son of Thomas.
Pending
further evidence it will be assumed that this is the correct baptism
John
SPEAKMAN-8 and his brother William were baptised at Finchingfield, sons of
Thomas & Hester. A series of
baptisms to these parents at Finchingfield run from 1696 to 1709. There is evidence of two other sons, both
probably born before 1695, so a marriage around 1690 is most likely. No such marriage between Thomas SPEAKMAN and
Hester however has been found in IGI or Essex Boyd.

strong evidence
of a son Thomas is provided by the m of Thomas SPEAKMAN in 1716 at Wethersfield
(2 miles from Finchingfield) followed by the burial of Thomas and the
remarriage of his widow Sara:

Since
Thomas was m in 1716 he was probably born before 1695, very likely the first
son; it seems more likely that Frances was also born before 1696 rather than
assuming his/her burial in 1717 was that of an infant.
