George was born in 1845 in the Euston area of London where his father worked as an organ builder. But his father died of TB the following year and his mother took George and her other children back home to Aberdeen. George became an engineer and married Isabella, a young widow with one child in 1865 when they were both 21. A son Frederick was born the following year, but then George went to sea. From 1868 to 1872 he was based mainly in Bombay sailing on mail ships through the newly opened Suez Canal. In 1872 he sat and passed his second engineers exam at Southampton, and two years later he obtained his first class certificate at London. His wife and son were still in Aberdeen and a daughter Isabel Mary was born there in 1875. From 1874 to 1871, George was sailing regularly between London and the Far East, and around 1878 the family moved to Poplar. Eva Maude was born in 1880 and Ada Gertrude in 1882. In 1881 the family were at Blair Street with Isabella's mother and her son by her first marriage, but by 1891 they were on their own in a new property in East India Dock Rd. After a spell of sailing to the West Indies (1882-1887), George sailed frequently between 1888 to after 1891 from London to Sydney Australia as 2nd engineer on the Wilcannia. At some time after 1895, he became chief engineer on the Echuca, also engaged in sailing to Sydney. Isabella died in 1896 aged 51, and George made his will the following year, leaving everything to his 3 daughters and making his eldest daughter executor; his son Frederick now married, was not mentioned. A rift between them is supposed to have been caused by Frederick’s marriage George died in the London Hospital of Bright's disease (a kidney condition) in 1897 aged 52 |

Wilcannia continued to sail to Sydney until at least 1909, but crew lists
later than 1890 have not yet been transcribed at this website
The Echuca
also sailed to Sydney during the late 19th C; crew lists for
arrivals in 1894 and 1895 show that Stevenson was not on board
This
suggests that he joined the Echuca not long before his death in Dec1897.
Both
Wilcannia and Echuca are named after towns in Australia, Wilcannia in NSW and
Echuca in Victoria
