Henry TILBURY was born in the Surrey parish of Frensham, but after marrying Sarah, moved to the village of Froyle in Hampshire about five miles away.  The record of his marriage to Sarah has not yet been found.  Two of his sisters who married at about the same time were married in Froyle and also settled there.

 

Henry and Sarah baptised six children at Froyle in the next fifteen years, but no record of his burial has yet been found.

If Henry were married c1740, a birth date of around 1710-1720 is expected, but could be earlier.  No suitable baptism was found at Froyle where registers commence in 1653 or in the IGI but a suitable baptism was found at nearby Frensham in Surrey (about 5 miles from Froyle) where the TILBURY name is numerous:

There is good circumstantial evidence that this Henry, baptised at Frensham, is the Henry who baptised his children at Froyle from 1742 to 1755:

  1. no burial or marriage record of Henry was found at Frensham

 

2.      Henry’s brother, John, who baptised his children at Frensham, married at Froyle:

  1. two apparent sisters of Henry also married at Froyle:

m 7Oct1736 Thomas HALL & Elizabeth TILBURY  [Elizabeth baptised 4Mar1709/10 at Frensham]

m 1Jny1740/1 John SPURRIER & Mary TILBURY   [Mary baptised 12Dec1719 at Frensham]

 

Jane, another probable sister of Henry, baptised 3Oct1707 at Frensham probably married William VICKERY 15Oct1733 at Binsted (between Frensham and Froyle) and settled at Bentley, just 2 miles along the main road from Froyle.

 

These strong connections within the Tilbury family between Frensham and Froyle establish a high probability that Henry of Froyle was indeed baptised at Frensham son of John.

 

MARRIAGE

 

Betty TILBURY-6 was baptised at Froyle HAM in 1746, daughter of Henry & Sarah.  A series of baptisms to these parents at Froyle continued from 1742 to 1755, so a marriage around 1740 is expected but no suitable marriage has yet been found at Froyle or elsewhere; not found in the IGI or VRI
