7 Thomas TOFTS c1753-1810

m Sarah CAMP 1775

Thomas TOFTS was probably born in a parish near the Essex village of Langley, son of Thomas, but his baptism has not been found.

Thomas became a labourer in Langley where he married Sarah CAMP in 1775 and baptised four children, all daughters.

BIRTH

Thomas married Sarah CAMP in 1775 and was probably buried in 1810.  Sarah was probably aged 31 at marriage, so a birth date for Thomas is expected around 1745/55.  No suitable baptism has been found.  However Thomas & Mary TOFTS were baptising children at this time in Langley.  They baptised three daughters between 1747 and 1751, the first of whom was named Mary.  There is then a gap of nine years before another daughter is baptised and then James aged 2.  The long gap suggests the family lived elsewhere at this time, though probably not far away, as they returned in 1760.

Failing other evidence it will be assumed that they had a son named Thomas born between 1751 and 1760, possibly baptised in a nearby parish.

MARRIAGE

Kitty TOFTS-6 was baptised at Langley ESS in 1779 daughter of Thomas and Mary TOFTS.  Other baptisms to these parents took place at Langley from 1747 to 1765, but this was followed by a gap of 14 years before the baptism of Kitty in 1779.  It is just possible that Kitty was the youngest child of this family; if Mary were 18 at marriage in 1746 she would be 51 in 1779.  On the other hand, Thomas & Sarah TOFTS were baptising children in Langley from 1775 to 1784 with a gap between 1775 and 1781.  Kitty would fit much better into this family, assuming a register error substituting Mary for Sarah as the mother's name.  (The original register has been examined and the entry is clearly Mary).  This possibility is supported by the names of Kitty's first two children Sarah and Grace, just as in Thomas & Sarah's family while neither name appears in Thomas & Mary's family.  It will be useful to find the age of Mary at marriage; an age much greater than 18 would rule out Kitty as her daughter.

Another possibilty is that Kitty was the illegitimate daughter of one of Mary's daughters but baptised as her own; Mary's daughter Elizabeth baptised three illegitimate children between 1775 and 1781 so Kitty might have been a fourth child; but as three were acknowledged to be her children, there seems no reason why a fourth should have been concealed.  Pending further evidence the most likely assumption is that Kitty is the daughter of Thomas and Sarah who were married at Langley in 1775:

m  6Oct1775 Thomas TOFTS & Sarah CAMP at Langley

DESCENDANTS

From the Langley parish register:

C 21Apr1775 Sarah     d Thomas & Sarah TOFTS

C 13Jul1779 Kitty     d Thomas & Mary TOFTS [see discussion above; assumed Mary is error for Sarah]

C 29Jul1781 Grace     d Thomas & Sarah TOFTS

b 12Jun1784 Sarah     d Thomas & Sarah TOFTS; B 12Feb1794 Sarah d Thomas & Sarah TOFTS infant

Another problem here is that the first baptism took place 5 months before the marriage (original register checked) without comment in the register.  Without further evidence it is assumed that this is correct.  There is no evidence of a second Thomas/Sarah family in the parish

DEATH

There are suitable burial records for both Thomas and Sarah, though only the latter gives an age; this yields an age at marriage of 31 which seems reasonable
