Thomas TOFTS married Mary SMITH in the Essex village of Langley in 1746, but this is the first TOFTS entry in the parish register, and the Thomas’ parish of origin is not known. Thomas and Mary baptised five children at Langley and possibly one or two others elsewhere. Thomas was buried at Langley in 1783 and Mary was also buried there five years later. |

Thomas
TOFTS-8 was married at Langley ESS in 1746 and was probably buried there in
1783. A birth date of around 1720 is therefore
expected, but no suitable baptism has been found. The Langley registers commence in 1678 and do not appear to be
deficient, but the first TOFTS entry found in the register and in the index was
Thomas' marriage in 1746. Unless the
TOFTS were previously non-conformists, this represents the arrival time of the
family in the parish.
It is
presently assumed that Thomas TOFTS-7 was the son of Thomas & Mary TOFTS
who baptised their children in Langley from 1747. These baptisms are preceded by the following marriage:
m 23Dec1746 Thomas TOFTS & Mary SMITH
at Langley
Mary SMITH
was baptised 24Mar1723 at Langley, dau of James & Mary SMITH. This gives a suitable age of 23 for Mary at
marriage, and note she had a child baptised James

it is
assumed that they also had a son Thomas born about 1753 but not baptised at
Langley.
Three
illegitimate children were baptised at Langley by Elizabeth who was probably
the daughter of John & Mary:
