Richard Trewavas was born in Mousehole in 1774, the son of a pilot and Methodist. He was sent to school where he became remarkably proficient in arithmetic and navigation, and was himself appointed schoolmaster. He later became a fisherman, but also wrote poetry and letters, some of which were published in “The Ladies Diary” and “The Entertainer”. In 1801 he married Jane WRIGHT at Paul parish church and they baptised four children there between 1803 and 1810. In 1813 he was converted to Methodism like his father, but he died only two years later at the age of 41. His many poems and writings were then published in a book of 176 pages and the profits applied to the relief of his widow and children. Jane outlived him by 43 years. She remained in Mousehole and was buried at Paul in 1858 |
