6 Richard TREWAVAS 1750-1823

m Jane HOSKIN 1773

Richard was born in 1750, the son of a farm labourer, but his father died when he was 4 and his mother remarried a Mousehole fisherman.

Richard became a fisherman and smuggler like his step-father, but in 1770 after being saved from a violent storm, he was converted to Methodism and gave up smuggling to become a pilot.  He was known as the King’s pilot for Cornwall and Scilly, an office which he held for nearly 40 years.  This included periods of war when he piloted the British fleet to safety from the Spanish and French

He married Jane HOSKIN at Paul parish church in 1773 at the age of 23, and baptised seven children there between 1774 and 1791.

Jane died in 1813 but Richard outlived her for ten years and was buried at Paul aged 73.  A biography of his life was published in 1839 by R.Treffry, later President of the Methodist Conference.

HOSKIN family

there are two possible baptisms of Jane HOSKIN in the Paul register:

C 15Feb1743+Jane d John    & Elizabeth HOSKIN

C  1Oct1749 Jane d Charles & Elizabeth HOSKIN

Jane’s age at burial gives a birth date of c1749; moreover Jane’s second son was named Charles, a relatively uncommon name.  It is safe to assume that the second baptism is correct, giving a marriage age of 24.  All  baptisms to Charles & Elizabeth found at Paul were:

m 17Jun1738 Charles HOSKIN & Elizabeth PENTREATH at Madron (from IGI)

C 26Jul1741 Mary      d Charles & Elizabeth HOSKIN

C  2Feb1742+Richard   s Charles & Elizabeth HOSKIN

C 26Dec1746 Elizabeth d Charles & Elizabeth HOSKIN

C  1Oct1749 Jane      d Charles & Elizabeth HOSKIN
