7 John VAILES 1692?-1730

m Mary SAVAGE 1715

John VAILES was born about 1692; his father John was a weaver in Witham.   When he was 20 he was found guilty of stealing a pair of sheets and sentenced to be whipped.

He married Mary SAVAGE at Witham in  1715 when he was 23, but their daughter Sarah had been born a year earlier.  At least three more children were born before John died in 1730.  At the time he was living in Duck End, a continuation of the main street of Witham over the bridge.

Mary remarried a widower two years later.

BIRTH

John's first known child (Sarah-6) was born in 1713 at Witham, so a birth for John around 1680/1690 is expected. No suitable baptism at Witham has been found.  However another John VAILES was m at Witham in 1691 (to Elizabeth PULLIN) and baptised Hannah there in 1707.  This is unlikely to be a previous marriage of John, since there is a second John burial in 1733 proving there were two adult John VAILES in the parish at the same time.  The only other VAILES parents at this time (William & Anne) were married in 1700 which is too late for a son to have a child in 1713.

It is very probable therefore that John-7 is the first son of John & Elizabeth PULLIN, born about 1692 and the baptism took place somewhere else or is missing (or was missed) in the Witham register.

MARRIAGE

the following marriage was missed in a search of Witham registers but appears in the IGI:

m  4Sep1715 Jn & Mary SAVAGE at Witham

this is 18 months after the birth of their child Sarah, so the date needs checking in the original register

DESCENDANTS

from the Witham register:

C  9May1714 Sarah     d John & Mary VAILES b 25Nov1713

C   Dec1716 George    s John & Mary VAILES b 13Dec1716

C 24Jun1722 Joseph VAILS            B 9Jan1723+Joseph VAILES

C  2Jul1727 John      s John & Mary VAILES b 7Jan1726+

no parents were named for Joseph, but the date fits best John & Mary as parents

DEATH

from the Witham register:

B  8Dec1730 John VEALES of Duck_End

m 18Nov1732 George LONG wdr & Mary VAILES wid

there is a second John burial in 1733, but as this occurs after Mary’s marriage it cannot refer to John 6

OTHER

from quarter sessions records 7Oct1712:

John VAILES of Witham guilty of stealing 3 Oct a pair of sheets and an apron worth 4s of Nathl GENTRY; wit: Thos LEVETT & Wm DARBY; pleaded not guilty, found guilty, to be whipped  (ERO Q/SR 553/7

[This probably refers to this John as he would be aged 20 and not yet married, but may refer to his father (John-8) who would be aged 44 a weaver and married]
