John WALKER ?-1843
|
|
|
|
|
m Isabel GRANT 1843
|
|
|
|
John WALKER was probably born about 1818 in Aberdeenshire, but it is not yet known who his parents were. He served as a journeyman grocer in Summer St, Aberdeen, but in 1842 was living over his own grocer's shop at 96 Gallowgate. He married Isabel GRANT in Aberdeen in 1843, but died the same year (probably in August) before their daughter Isabel was baptised the following year. |

John WALKER was a grocer in Aberdeen when he married in 1843, but there is no indication of his age or origin, and this has not yet been found. Possible leads are as follows:
1) The 1841 census for Aberdeen was searched and the only likely entry found was a John WALKER, journeyman grocer aged 20 at Summer St. If this is he, then he was born between 1815 and 1821 giving a normal age of 22-28 at marriage. A little support is given by the presence of Isabella GRANT a servant in Silver St just a street away in the same census. John Walker married Isabella GRANT and this is perhaps how they met
The 1842-43 Aberdeen Directory has an entry for John WALKER grocer
at 96 Gallowgate (shop and home), but no earlier or later entries. This is probably he, setting up his own shop
for the first time - aged 25?
With John in the 1841 census was Robert WALKER, apprentice grocer,
aged 15. Probably John's brother, born
1821-26, both born Aberdeenshire. The
OPR however has no suitable parents for these brothers in Aberdeen itself. Best
in ABERDEEN is Robert & Marion BAXTER who baptised Robert in 1812, John in
1814. But this makes Robert older than
John, and it seems unlikely that the 1841 census would have made this
error. m of Baxter not found nor other
children in OPR. Should check rest of
county in OPR.
2) When dau Isabella m in
1862 she did so at 181 Gallowgate. But
in 1878-9, the Aberdeen directory has a John WALKER, grocer and spirit dealer
shop at this address, his home being 164 Crown St. In the 1881 census John WALKER, grocer, was at 183 Gallowgate,
age 41, wid, born Aberdeen. It seems
likely that he was related especially as this address is on the corner of Berry
Lane where dau Isabella lived with her aunt in 1861. No Walker found there in 61 or 91 census. If 81 age is correct, this John was born
1839/40. Could he be the son of John
WALKER-4?
From 1) above it is believed that John was unmarried in the 1841
census, so difficult to be son of this John or his supposed brother
Robert. It is just possible that John
married just after the census in April 1841 and had a son John later that year
which would make him 39 in the 1881 census; his first wife must then die c1842
for John to remarry in 1843.
There are 3 possible Johns son of John in OPR ; John & Ann
WILLIAMSON can be ruled out since they baptised children after 1843; John &
Christian WALES C children from 1832 to 5Jan1843 so possible that mother died
and John re-married Isabel GRANT in Jun1843; if this is the right family then
the journeyman grocer unmarried in 1841 is someone else; John & Christian
SMITH had only one known child, John C8Jun1839, so again the 1841 grocer must
be someone else. John & Christian
were not found in 1841 census but son John was with SMITH grandparents in 1851
aged 12 . Had both parents died? Grandparent was a blacksmith so no reason
for John to became a grocer. Isabella
GRANT remarried WALLACE and named one of her children Ann Smith - but seems
unlikely that she would name a child after her first husband's first wife.
Another possibility is that John of the 81 census was son of John and Isabella but born before their marriage; in this case John could be the 41 census grocer, already a father. Should look for a John GRANT aged 1 or 2 in 41 census, but he was not with Isabella in the 51 census though he would have been only 11 or 12. There is a John WALKER aged 2 son of Robert & Ann, b Aberdeen; Robert was vintner at Schoolhill in 1841 and at 5 Green in 1851, no other children with them in either census. Robert was b1798 Glenbervie Kincardine, Ann b1800 Montrose.
3)
John’s daughter Isobel married George STEVENSON, but George had a sister
who married William WALKER. It is
possible that William and Isobel were related.
William was the son of Charles, a coal store keeper, deceased by 1860 so
cannot be a brother of Isobel, but might be a cousin. In this case John-4 and Charles would be brothers. Charles m Margaret BEGG at Lumphanan ABD
8Apr1833 and was found in the 1851 Aberdeen census[red14]; he was
a grocer at 50 East North St (not far from Gallowgate) aged 42 born c1809
Cushnie Aberdeenshire. Interesting that
he was a grocer. The IGI has him C9May1808
s George WALKER & Kathrine EMSLIE; other children William C2Oct1809 at
Kincardine O’Neil ABD; Peter C 1Lan1815 at Newhills ABD. No John in IGI – need to search OPR
4) The 1851 census has a John WALKER aged 77 late merchant born Aberdeen at 4 Bonacord Terrace. His wife Isabella was born c1777 Kintore. This is interesting since in 1861, John’s daughter Isobel was with her aunt Ann GRANT who was born Kintore c1789. They had a son Alexander bc1814 Aberdeen and next door was James a hardware merchant bc1820 Aberdeen. Possibly he was the John WALKER grocer at 115 Gallowgate in the trade directory of 1832-3
The IGI has children of John WALKER & Isobella MARTIN all C at
Aberdeen except Isabel Rachel
Margaret C31Mar1797
James Tough C 9Dec1802
Isabel Rachel C23Dec1804 Old Machar
John
C30May1811 is this were John-4 he would be
aged 29 or 30 in the 1841 census so rounded down to 25 or 30; not 20 as found
in Summer St
Alexander C 9Apr1814
James C10Jun1819
no marriage or son Robert in IGI, need to search OPR
Isobel
WALKER-3 was baptised 2Mar1844 at Aberdeen St Nicholas; baptism and marriage
records state that parents were John WALKER and Isabella GRANT. There is a suitable marriage of these parents
in the same parish the previous year:
m 9Jun1843 by banns at Aberdeen St
Nicholas by James Foote, minister in Aberdeen
John WALKER, grocer in Aberdeen &
Isabel GRANT d James GRANT, manufacturer in Aberdeen
witnesses:James CRAIGEN, Shoemaker,
Aberdeen; James FRASER, grocer, Aberdeen
C 2Mar1844 Isabel Joan d John WALKER
deceased, merchant, & Isabel GRANT
John was
married on 9Jun1843 but was recorded as deceased at the baptism of his daughter
on 2Mar1844. There are two possible
burials at Old Machar, Aberdeen:
B 16Aug1843 John WALKER, carter, Aberdeen,
in the church yard
B 22Aug1843 John, son of George WALKER,
town house servant, in the church yard
but neither
of these fit well; the first was a carter not a grocer; the second was almost
certainly an unmarried child or infant
(for references to John's widow, Isabella,
after 1861 see GRANT records)
