Martha Ann was born in the Milton area of Southend in 1834, the youngest child of Matthew, an agricultural labourer. There were 5 other children at the time and she was christened at St Mary, Prittlewell. By 1841, the family was at Jail Farm in Barling,
and by 1851, Martha was a live-in servant to Farmer Bannister of Jail Farm. In 1854, Martha married Henry MANN, a gardener, at Rochford Wesleyan Chapel. [There is a story that Martha Ann eloped with her husband from a seminary at Terling, but this does not seem borne out by the data. Martha Ann's father came from Terling, but it seems unlikely that either Martha or Henry were ever there. Possibly Terling was confused with Barling, but the presence of Martha's father, Matthew, as a witness to the wedding does not suggest an elopement. Possibly the story really relates to Martha Ann’s parents - see Matthew]. Martha and Henry lived first at Sutton near Rochford, then moved to Cockater Farm and finally Elim Cottage, both at Shoebury. Henry was a successful market gardener at Elim Cottage where they brought up 9 children. There are photographs of her at Elim Cottage. Martha was there with her unmarried children Walter, Rose and Eva when she died in 1921, 14 years after Henry |
