Matthew was born and baptised in the parish of Fairstead, Essex in 1787, but by 1790, his parents were living in the neighbouring parish of Terling. Matthew was still there with his parents in 1801 aged 13, but had left them probaby by 1809 and certainly by 1811. The next record is of his marriage at Paglesham to Elizabeth SKINSLEY in 1815. [There is a story that Matthew’s daughter Martha Ann eloped with her
husband from a seminary at Terling, but this is not borne out by the data and
possibly the story should relate to Matthew and Elizabeth. There was a seminary or girls school in
the centre of Terling, and Matthew lived there as a young man. Elizabeth was baptised in Paglesham, but
it is not known whether she was sent to school at Terling some 20 miles
away. It seems unlikely, but the
family story otherwise has some credibility.
The marriage took place after banns in Elizabeth’s home parish, which
does not sound like an elopement – though the marriage was witnessed by Elizabeth’s
sister, not her father] After marriage, Matthew and Elizabeth lived first in the parish of Southchurch where 5 children were born, but 3 died young. Matthew was a gardener. About 1825, they moved to the Milton area of Southend where four more children were born and baptised at Prittlewell. In 1841, Matthew was an agricultural labourer living at Jail Farm in Barling (on the road to Sutton and Rochford). Matthew & Elizabeth remained in Barling for the rest of their lives, where Matthew was a gardener. In the 1861 census, Elizabeth was a nurse at the home of Joseph Brown, a farm bailiff, while Matthew was living with their eldest daughter, Betsy; Betsy was an imbecile who remained with her parents until their deaths. They both died of old age when they were nearly 80. Their son Daniel of Wakering was a Methodist local preacher. Their youngest daughter Martha married a market gardener, Henry MANN |
