Samuel was baptised at Witham in 1752, but by the age
of 26 when he married Sarah SPELLER at Felstead, he was living at
Terling. Four children were born in
Terling, but only a son Samuel survived.
His wife Sarah also died after the birth of their fourth child in
1785. Sarah was buried at the expense
of the parish, and Samuel remarried Elizabeth DUDLEY only 3 months later. Samuel was probably a weaver like his father, but the trade was in decline and in October 1785, Samuel, with his wife and son Samuel were removed by the overseers of the poor from Terling to Witham. A son William was baptised at Witham the following year. By 1787 they had moved to Fairstead, a neighbouring parish to Terling, and by 1790 were back in Terling where two more sons were baptised. Samuel had now escaped from poverty since he was not listed in the 1809 return of the poor in Terling. He was listed in "trade" (perhaps still a weaver) in the census of 1801 but was in agriculture in 1809 and 1811. Elizabeth was buried at Terling in 1824 age 73,
but the burial of Samuel has not been found at Terling, Witham or Fairstead |

Looking for birth of Samuel "of Tarling" who m Sarah SPELLER 15Sep1778 and then lived at Terling. He was not baptised at Terling, and was not recorded there in the census of May1775 and Jul1778. The removal certificate of Samuel and Elizabeth suggests that Samuel came from Witham. There are two possible baptisms there:
C 17Sep1752 B 27Aug1752 Samuel s Matthew & Sarah WENDON [age 26 at m]
C 11Sep1761 B 29Aug1761 Samuel s Matthew & Elizabeth WENDON, [age 17y 1m at m]
On age grounds, the first m is much more likely; moreover Samuel named 4 of his children Sarah (two by his first wife Sarah, two by his second wife Elizabeth, all 4 died young), but named no child Elizabeth. His four sons, William, Matthew, Thomas, John are not obviously named after any known ancestors, apart from Matthew; John occurs in Sarah VAILE's family, but William occurs only in the Matthew/Elizabeth tree.
At present, it will be assumed that the first baptism is correct; Samuel's age at burial would be useful check, but no burial record has been found.
Matthew WENDON-4 was C at Fairstead, son of Samuel & Elizabeth, in 1787; there is no suitable m at Fairstead, but Samuel WENDON married Elizabeth DUDLEY in the neighbouring parish of Terling in 1785:
m 12Jul1785 Saml WENDON wdr of Terling & Eliz DUDLEY spr of Terling
Since DUDLEY was used as a christian name by Martha Anne WENDON-3 for one of her children, and also for my brother David, there is little doubt that this is the correct marriage. The entry shows Samuel as a widower, and is preceded by the following:
Sep1778 Saml WENDEN of Terling & Sarah SPELLER spr of Felstead, banns of marriage only
The Felstead register contains the m of Samuel to Sarah:
m 15Sep1778 Samuel WENDAY (signed WENDE) of Tarling & Sarah SPELLER
C 8Nov1778 Sarah d Saml & Sarah WENDON; B 16Jul1780 Sarah WENDON infant
C 28May1780 Saml s Saml & Sarah WENDON;
C 18Aug1782 Wm s Saml & Sarah WENDON; B 28Sep1782 Wm WENDON infant
B 20Mar1785 Sarah WENDON at expense of parish
B 29Mar1785 Sarah WENDON infant at expense of parish
C 27Apr1785 Sarah d Saml & late Sarah WENDON [should this be 27March?]
The removal order for Samuel & Elizabeth (see below) dated Oct1785 refers only to a son, so both Sarah daughters had died by this time. It seems likely that the register is in error and that the second Sarah was baptised 27Mar1785 not April and buried two days later. Little doubt that Samuel's wife Sarah died from childbirth.
C 17Sep1786 William s Samuel & Elizabeth WENDON at Witham b 29Jul1786
C 16Sep1787 Matthew s Saml & Eliz WENDEN at Fairstead
C 10Oct1790 Thos s Saml & Eliz WENDON at Terling
C 15Jul1792 John s Saml & Eliz WENDON at Terling
B 12May1789 Sarah WENDON d Saml & Eliz at Terling
B 26Oct1794 Sarah WENDON d Saml & Eliz at Terling
B 12Jun1802 John WENDON at Terling
B 12Nov1824 Eliz WENDON age 73 [b 1751]
since Elizabeth DUDLEY was C 1751 at Terling, little doubt that this is correct burial.
Burial of Samuel not found at Terling or Witham or Fairstead; not in Essex burial burial index, but little of Witham hundred indexed so far -
It would be useful to know his age at burial if given to check his baptism
in agriculture trade other
