Jane WRIGHT was born in Mousehole and baptised in the Methodist chapel there in 1837. Her father was a fisherman, but in 1851 the family were living in a better part of Mousehole, Wesley Squre. Jane married a seaman Henry BLEWETT when she was 23 and almost immediately he left for an almost continuous life at sea. Two daughters were born at Mousehole before the family moved to Stepney to be near the docks when Henry arrived home. A son was born in 1866 and the same year Henry began a 15 year period sailing to the W.Indies as captain of the sailing ship Roseau. Jane is known to have accompanied him on some of these voyages and In 1864 aged 27, Henry passed the master’s examination at Plymouth, and was immediately given command of various ships sailing from London to the West Indies. Henry now had a wife and two daughters, and the family moved from Cornwall to Stepney to be near the docks when he arrived home. A son was born in Stepney in 1866, and that year Henry was given command of his own ship the Roseau, which he was to captain continuously for the next 15 years. Two more children were born in Stepney, but in 1881, the fortunes of the family changed for the worse. In 1881 now aged 44, Henry sailed the Roseau for the last time, and that year also, their daughter Rosea died of TB. Henry sailed on steam ships until 1883, when his ship was sunk in Lisbon harbour. The family returned to Mousehole for a few years, during which time Henry sold the fishing vessel Mignonette which he had previously bought and which had been used by his brother’s in law. The family story is that he was caught in a fierce storm as he sailed the fishing vessel up the channel, and had to lash Jane to the mast to prevent her from being washed overboard. By 1891 Jane had moved to Wanstead with her unmarried son Charles. She was now listed as a laundress. Later that year, Henry was shipwrecked off Madras and died of pneumonia. His gold watch and sextant were the only personal possession recovered from the wreck and were delivered to his widow. A few years later, Jane was granted a pension of £2 pa by the Trinity Almshouses, and was admitted to the Almshouses in 1907 aged 70. Here she remained in pleasant surroundings for 14 years, often visited by her children and grandchildren |

The
Register of Almspeople 1845-1971 (Guildhall Ms 30219) is indexed, and had
entries for Jane BLEWETT in vol.2
Jane
Blewett; admitted 10 Mar 1907, age 70. Nominated by the Bow E. Board. Died 3
Jan 1921
The
register of Almspeople and Pensioners 1729-1946 (Ms 30218) is indexed only for
1907-1939. There were no entries for BLEWETT in this index
The Agenda
of the Pensions Committee (Ms 30216) was in the form of an annual register of
pensioners, each pensioner coming up for review once a year. Jane's application for assistance was
discussed from 1897 in volumes 12, 13 and 14.
Each entry gives a name and address, the amount given the previous year,
and the amount to be given in the current year. Jane was given £2 every year, but the remarks column is of
interest:

sure enough whether Mrs

come in the category of those to whom donations are usually given" £2
14 Dec
1900: Burdett Rd, widow 362, age 64. £2 Jan 1900 C.O.S reported. £2
20 Dec 1901:

12 Dec

15 Dec
1903: Leytonstone, widow 362, age 67. £2 Jan 1903 when C.O.S reported
favourably. £2
Further
entries probably occur each year until Jane was admitted in 1907 but have not
been extracted.
["C.O.S" must have been some investigating committee. I assumed the address (Bow, Burdett Rd, Leytonstone) was that of Jane, but on reflection it may have been that of the area board dealing with the case]
