4 John Richard WRIGHT 1800-1880
|
|
|
|
|
m Jane TREWAVAS 1830 |
|
|
|
John Richard was born in Mousehole in 1800 the son of a fisherman, and became a fisherman like his father. When he was 30, he married a Mousehole girl Jane TREWAVAS at the parish church ten years younger than himself, and over the next 24 years, ten children were born and baptised at the Methodist chapel in Penzance or Mousehole By 1851, John was master of his own fishing boat the “Briton” and his family were living in the comfortable surroundings of Wesley Square, Mouehole. John and Jane remained in Wesley Square for the rest of their lives, living there with unmarried and married children. John remained a fisherman all his life and died in 1880 aged 80. Jane outlived him for seven years and they were both buried in Paul churchyard. |

from 51 61 and 71 census, John was born c1800/1 at
Mousehole, and from his death certificate he was born1802/3 There are four possible baptisms in the Paul
register:
C

C

WRIGHT
C16May1802

C14Dec1806

the
families into which they were born can also be traced from the Paul register:

the object
is to determine which of these John WRIGHTs could have married Jane TREWAVAS,
and an 1831 marriage at Paul eliminates one of them:
m
6Nov1831 John Carvasoe WRIGHT otp & Ann JASPER otp by banns;w John UREN,
Richd PENTREATH
Clearly
the son of John & Jane CARVASOE married Ann JASPER, and not Jane TREWAVAS
An 1826
marriage helps eliminate another of the John’s

B 7Aug1841 Susanna WRIGHT Mousehole 42 [b1799]
This John
WRIGHT cannot be the son of John & Margaret, otherwise he would have
married his sister. Naming a son John
Thomas suggests strongly that he was the son of Thomas & Mary, and the 41
census confirms that he was born c1794 (exact dates seem to have been used in
this case)

The 51
census names him as John T WRIGHT widower, though his age is probably
incorrect, given by the master of the boat as 52:
Charles PEZZACK ca mar 29 1822 owner of boat Paul
William BARNES fi unm 21 1829 part owner of nets Paul
William HARVEY fi unm 22 1829 part owner of nets Paul
John
T WRIGHT fi wdr 52 1799 part owner of nets Paul
John JAMES fi unm 24 1827 part owner of nets Paul
John
C PEZZACK fi unm 15 1836 fisherman's boy Paul
As he is
named John T, this further confirms him as the son of Thomas & Mary
Only the
sons of Richard & Mary or John & Margaret are now left as candidates
for John-4. John-4 named his eldest son
John Richard, and was himself known as John Richard at the marriage of his
daughter Jane. It is almost certain
therefore that he was the son of Richard & Mary HARRY rather than the son
of John & Margaret. John-4 named
three other children, Richard, Mary and Charles, names also used by Richard
& Mary for their children while no known children were named Margaret. Additionally, the baptismal date of 1800
agrees best with the consistent age given by John-4 in every census (since his
age would be the same as the number of the year, it would be easy to remember). The history of John, son of John & Margaret
is not known. Possibly he married
Amelia PENTREATH in 1828 at Paul and baptised John Peter in 1831 and perhaps
John Edgar in 1851; there is no other candidate for this marriage:

It is
interesting to consider the 1851 census for the boat Briton in the light of
these conclusions:
John
R WRIGHT ma mar 50 1801 owner of boat, part owner of nets [ma=master]
Paul
John
R WRIGHT fi unm 17 1834 part owner of nets [fi=fisherman]
Paul
Richard WRIGHT fi mar 56 1795 part owner of nets Paul
Frederick WRIGHT
fi mar 31 1820 part owner of nets Paul
Joseph TREWAVAS fi mar 44 1807 part owner of nets Paul
Joseph TREWAVAS bo 15 1836
boy
[bo=boy] Paul
Richard OLIVER fi mar 54 1797 part owner of nets Paul?
John R
WRIGHT is clearly John-4, and John R junior is his son. However, Richard WRIGHT on the same boat can
be identified with confidence as the eldest son of Richard & Mary HARRY,
together with his own son Frederick. Thus
two brothers were on the same boat both with their sons, but it seems strange that
the younger of the brothers was the master and owner, while the elder brother
was merely a member of the crew.
However this is not enough in itself to rule out the above analysis. Possibly the younger brother was master
because of his capability; possibly there was some reason to leave a boat to
the youngest member of a family (assuming he became owner of the boat by
inheritance); possibly he inherited the boat by reason of his marriage. Joseph TREWAVAS was in fact related to Jane
(see TREWAVAS family history)
Thus it is
concluded on the grounds of naming patterns, consistent age, and the
elimination of all but one other possibility, that John-4 was the son of
Richard and Mary HARRY:
C 8Aug1800 John s Richard & Mary WRIGHT at
Paul
Jane-3 was
baptised at the Methodist church in 1837, dau of John & Jane WRIGHT, and
the 51 census shows she had an older sister Arabella born c1832 There is only one suitable marriage at Paul:
m
1Dec1830 John WRIGHT otp & Jane TREWAVAS otp by banns; wit: Saml WRIGHT,
Richd PENTREATH
further
confirmation that this is the correct marriage is given by a family tradition
of a connection with the Trewavas family
The witness Samuel WRIGHT, was in fact related to Jane TREWAVAS rather
than the groom, as shown in the TREWAVAS family records
