5A Jane WRIGHT 1776-1858

m Richard TREWAVAS 1801

Jane WRIGHT was born in Mousehole in 1776 the daughter of a fisherman.  She married Richard Trewavas at the parish church when she was 26.  She signed with X, but her husband was unusually well-educated, proficient in arithmetic and navigation, and was a schoolmaster as well as a fisherman and wrote poetry and letters, some of which were published in magazines of the time.

Richard & Jane baptised four children between 1803 and 1810.  In 1813 Richard was converted to Methodism like his father, but he died only two years later at the age of 41.  His many poems and writings were then published in a book of 176 pages and the profits applied to the relief of his widow and children.

Jane outlived him by 43 years.  She remained in Mousehole and was buried at Paul in 1858
