Frances was born in 1767 and baptised at St Andrew, Holborn, where her parents were living in Chancery Lane. When she was just 18 she married Samuel KILBOURNE at St Leonard's Shoreditch. A son Samuel was born the following year, and another son Benjamin was born 15 years later in 1800. It is probable that other children were born in between, but their names are not known. In 1800, Samuel and Frances were living at Holywell Mount in the heart of Shoreditch, but possibly moved to Bethnal Green before Samuel died in 1821 Frances died two years later aged 56. They were both buried at the Gibraltar burial ground in Bethnal Green. |

From age
at burial, Frances Elizabeth was born around 1767. She married Samuel at
Shoreditch in 1784. There is a suitable baptism at nearby Holborn St Andrew;
the correct date, and the unusual double forename, leaves no doubt that this is
the correct baptism:
C 22Feb1767 Frances_Elizabeth d William & Susanna WYATT of Chancery
Lane; at Holborn St Andrew
Susanna
WYATT was a witness at Frances' marriage, so probably her mother.
Frances
Elizabeth married Samuel KILBOURN at Shoreditch St Leonard in 1784:
m 19Dec1784 Samuel KILBOURN bch otp &
Frances_Elizabeth_WYATT spr otp after banns; both signed; w: Susanna WYATT,
Henry SPARROW
The fact
that Samuel and his bride both signed the marriage register, and the bride had
two christian names, suggest they were not poor. Their eldest son, though only a carman, remained at the same
address (Webbs Square) for 25 years, which again suggest that he was not afraid
of the rent collector.
Only one
baptism to Samuel and Frances has been found:
C 10Aug1800 b31Mar1800 Benjamin s Samuel
& Frances KILBURN of Holywell Mount; at St Leonards Shoreditch
Their
eldest son was Samuel, born c1785 in
MDX according to 1841 census but his baptism has not been found
The
absence of christenings between marriage in 1784 and baptism of Benjamin in
1800 both at St Leonard is puzzling; Samuel and Frances Elizabeth were buried
at Gibraltar Row burial ground; this was a Protestant Dissenters burial ground;
I am not sure that this necessarily indicates a non-conformist background, but
this could be one explanation for the absence of baptismal records. Alternatively, after marrying in London,
they moved back to Samuel's home parish, wherever that may be, and baptised
their children there. See Samuel
KILBOURNE for
further discussion
