[1] The 1627 will of Thomas YOUNG,
husbandman of Kirtlington, mentions his wife Jane and children Elizabeth & Thomas;
brothers Jeffery and John and brothers John GODBEHERE, John SLATTERS and Henry
LOVE. Almost certainly therefore, he
was the brother of Elizabeth, Jeffery and Margaret who were baptised at Epwell,
15 miles from Kirtlington. Margaret
YOUNG m John SLATTER at Bladon in 1619 (4 miles from Klirtlington). Epwell PR start 1577 so Thomas, John &
Mary (m Henry LOVE) possibly born before this date. This Kirtlinton family was researched in case Nicholas of
Kirtlington was another brother.
However, he was not mentioned in Thomas' will, though he was alive at
the time (1627) and it seems unlikely therefore that Nicholas was related to
Thomas. Nicholas’ will might help
though it is said to be "decayed".
[2] In his will of 1740, William
YOUNG left a large estate to Thomas and Anne YOUNG and to their children
William and Thomas, but did not state their relationship to himself. A land document of 1774 however identifies
William junior as the grandson of William senior
[3] The Kirtlington register between
1700 and 1720 has been lost; thus no children of William and Ann are known
other than Thomas known from William’s will
[4] In 1771 Thomas YOUNG senior,
butcher of Kirtlington was prosecuted by Mary HUNT for assault
[5] 1788 Richard YOUNG husbandman
of Kirtlington and Thomas YOUNG butcher of Bletchingdon to answer to overseers
of Bletchingdon for a bastard
[6] From census returns, the
William who married Frances BAYLIS was born c1773 at Kirtlington; the only
qualifying baptism in the Kirtlington or Bletchingdon register is William son
of Thomas & Dorothy christened 1777.
However there is a William burial at Kirtlington just 10 weeks later,
and Dorothy's will of 1812 mentions only her daughters Elizabeth and Mary and
Mary's natural son William.
