From the Eastern Counties Herald, Thursday, 6th April 1848:

PORT OF GOOLE - SINGULAR COINCIDENCE

Mr John Dails, commission-agent, Goole, who bonded the first goods deposited in the warehouse and in the timber pond there, after the opening of that port for foreign trade in 1828, happened also to be the first party to send goods by the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole Railway, having forwarded eleven casks of wine under bond to Liverpool by the first goods train despatched after the opening of that line.

Miss Diana Dails advertised her Ladies' School, 2 East Parade, Goole.

Her father, John Dails, was one of the first inhabitants of the Company town of Goole, being listed in Pigot & Co.'s Directory of 1828/9 as a Commission Agent/Wine and Spirit Merchant, at 11 Bank's Terrace.

In 1834 he was described as Agent/Danish Consul, in Aire Street.

For the census of 1851, he was a widower, aged 57, and a General Commission Agent, with place of birth given as Russia (British Subject). His daughter, Diana, was unmarried, aged 30, and born at Hull.

From the Goole and Marshland Gazette, 1st March 1854:

Death : 28th January 1854, at St Petersburg, where he had resided for the last 28 years, aged 62, Mr Thomas Dails, formerly of Hull, brother of Capt. Dails of that place, and of Mr John Dails of the town.

From the Goole and Marshland Gazette, 1st May 1855:

Death : 20th April 1855, at Aire Street, aged 62, John Dails.

N.B. Diana Dails continues to appear as a teacher at the same address in the next three censuses, being 61 years of age for the census of 1881.

From the Goole Times, 6th September 1889:

Death : At Southport, recently, Miss Dinah Dails, formerly of East Parade, Goole.

In Goole Parish Church there is a brass plaque, detached from the former pulpit, which has the inscription :

The Corona above was
given to this Church in loving
memory of Diana Dails,
formerly of Goole, who died at
Southport, August 27th 1889
