Contact me

Did your ancestors live in East Yorkshire; in Howden or the surrounding villages such as Asselby, Gilberdyke or North Cave? Or perhaps in the new port of Goole, the town of Snaith or the villages of Whitgift or Rawcliffe? I offer a professional family history research service for these areas. I also can supply old photographs of the villages in which your ancestors lived.

About me

Since I set up this website I have had many queries from people with ancestors in the Howdenshire and Goole areas who have asked for help tracing their family trees. Where I already had the information I gave it freely, and will continue to do so, but I am now in a position to offer a professional service tracing the genealogy of those whose forebears came from the parts of East Yorkshire and of the old West Riding of Yorkshire in which I have an interest.

I have an honours degree in medieval and modern history, a teaching certificate, have published several books on local history and written many newpaper articles about the Goole and Howden areas. I presently lecture on local history to adult students and have also run courses and lectured on how to research family history.

Sources

I have an extensive collection of local history material which I have amassed over the years from visits to local archives as well as books, pamphlets, old photographs, wills, newspaper cuttings, monumental inscription booklets and CDs.

I also have access to all the censuses, local newspaper files, trade directories and to most local parish records and am ideally placed to visit the archives in both Beverley and York. Over the past 30 years I have built up a personal knowledge of what information is available for the local area and am now wllling to put this information to good use to help you find out more about your family connections with the area.

I can offer a full family tree search back through the generations or maybe just help with your particular 'brick wall'. I can also create for you a book incorporating your family history, stories and photos which you can pass on down the generations.

I am also willing to search out and photograph your ancestor's gravestone, house, farm, school or street or to provide you with background information about the village or town where they lived. I also have a large collection of old photographs of the area so that you can see what the town or village looked like when your ancestors lived there.

New sources

I have an almost complete run of Goole Times almanacks from 1912 to 1940. These list the names of people living in Goole, Howden and several surrounding villages.

I can also now perform an online search of Leeds, Hull and several other provincial newspapers between 1800 and 1900 for your ancestors' name or for specific events.

Prices

I charge £15 per hour for research (or £4/£5 for an old photo - please have a look at my old photographs page for a small sample) and would be happy to give you a free quotation if you would like to contact me by email with details of the information you already have and what you would like to find out.
