Surrey Senior Cup - Quarter Final

Kingstonian 4

Sutton United 0

Sutton were dumped unceremoniously out of this Years County Cup by local rivals Kingstonian who on the night thoroughly deserved their victory.

Sutton, who were without Jimmy Dack, Joff Vansittart and Andy Salako never looked likely to get into the contest especially after a second goal just before half time put distance between the sides when Sutton were in the middle of their best spell of the game.

Murray Jones returned to Sutton ranks for the rested Vansittart to play against the side he was sent off against in the infamous Battle of Gander Green Lane last Spring but their was never any heat in this contest which for most of the second half took on the atmosphere of a pre-season friendly rather than a cup tie.

Kingston were on top territorially from the start and after seventeen minutes they took the lead, Colin Luckett's fierce strike from the edge of the box finding the bottom corner of the net past Les Cleevely's outstretched right hand.

Matt Hanlan did have a chance to level the scores when put through by Murray Jones but keeper Stuart Mackenzie saved his left foot shot. Kingstonian, in the main, had a grip on the game and they further strengthened it with a rather fortunate second goal. David Leworthy who had just had an effort ruled out for offside scored when the ball he struck a hopeful lob from twenty yards out and it looped right over the stranded Les Cleevely into the net. The half ended with Eddie Akuamoah and Barry Laker being booked after an altercation.

If Sutton fans were looking for an improvement in the second half they were to be disappointed. Murray Jones was put through early on by Steve Watson but he shot straight at keeper Stuart Mackenzie when he could have done better. But from then on in Kingstonian dominated proceedings and after fifty-two minutes the game was ended as a contest when Neville Roach made it three. Sutton's misery was completed three minutes from time when Eddie Akuamoah stabbed the ball home from three yards after a goalmouth scramble.

The Sutton line up was:

Les Cleevely, Danny Brooker, David Everitt, Gwynne Berry, Paul Clark, Barry Laker, Steve Watson, John Ugbah, Andy Salako, Junior Haynes and Murray Jones.

Andy Salako Nassim Akrour and James Virgo were the Subs.

Sutton now return to league duty with an eagerly awaited league game against fast improving Enfield at Gander Green Lane on Saturday kick off three p.m.
