Isthmian League Premier Division

Oxford City 1

Sutton United 2

Sutton collected three precious league points on a cold evening in front of a sparse crowd. Sutton looking hung over from their efforts on Saturday and it was Oxford who looked the more hungry side in the first half and took the lead as early as the eighth minute. Their didn't seem to be any danger when Ian Concannon picked the ball up ten yards outside the box but with an electric burst of acceleration he outstripped the Sutton defence and his angled shot beat Les Cleevely inside his left hand post.

If this was to be the spring board for Sutton to impose themselves on the game it didn't materialise in the first half as keeper Mick Torres was not forced into a single save and chances at both ends were few and far between. Joff Vansittart had a shot that he pulled across the goal and Steve Watson just failed to connect with a corner flicked on at the near post by Andy Salako. But most of the crowd was glad of the half time whistle and a chance to get in the warm.

Sutton made an early change in the second half, John Ugbah coming on for David Everitt and within a minute Sutton were level. A corner won on the right side by Matt Hanlan and taken by Jimmy Dack was partially cleared. Paul Clark with an acrobatic overhead kick got the ball back into the danger area where Joff Vansittart hit a shot on the turn that crept into the far corner of the net possibly via a deflection by Matt Hanlan.

This seemed to relax Sutton a little and they had their best spell of the game, John Ugbah was having a growing influence in midfield and it was he who got Sutton's winner. Joff Vansittart forced a fine save from a header and from the resulting corner floated in by Jimmy Dack the ball was headed on at the near post and Ugbah rising above the defence six yards out powered in an unstoppable header for his first competitive goal for the club.

Although Matt Hanlan then had a header cleared off the line it was Oxford who missed one glorious opportunity for an equaliser eight minutes from time. Jason Caffel found himself on the end of a cross ten yards out but his volley went wide with the goal at his mercy. So Sutton left with a win their supporters probably happier with the three points than the performance.

The Sutton side was Les Cleevely, Danny Brooker, David Everitt, Sean Daly, Paul Clark, Clive Gartell, Jimmy Dack, Steve Watson, Andy Salako, Matt Hanlan and Joff Vansittart. John Ugbah came on for David Everitt, Dominic Feltham and Dave Pattullo were the unused subs.

They now face another trip on Saturday to take on Aylesbury United kick off 3pm.
