Purfleet 0 : 6 Sutton United
Monday 18th August 1997 . Kick off 7.30pm
Sutton made one change from the side that overcame Hitchin on Saturday, bringing Sean Daley in at number three in place of James Vergo. They started brightly and Steve Watson should have scored early on when he powered through the middle onto a through ball, his cross shot only just missing the left hand post, this after a fine off the ball run by Joff Vansittart who took two defenders with him. However Sutton were soon in front and it was Vansittart again who did the damage controlling a cross before beating a defender and firing a right foot shot beyond keeper Desborough's outstretched left hand. The game then became a bit of a stale mate for much of the remainder of the half with Purfleet having much of the possession but failing to create any notable chances apart from one fine save by Les Cleevely who got sharply down at his left hand post to block a shot. The game burst into life five minutes before half time when firstly, Matt Hanlon got his second of the season, and then Vansittart his second of the night to virtually put the game beyond Purfleet's reach. There was no let up in the second half and Danny Brooker got himself on the score sheet with a rasping drive from the edge of the penalty area and Andy Salako followed soon after when he latched onto a poor back pass to fire into an empty net. Vansittart deservedly got his hat trick after 67 minutes to round off a fine all round performance. The Sutton team was Les Cleevely, Danny Brooker, Sean Daley, Gwynne Berry, Dave Pattulo, Paul Clark, Jimmy Dack, Steve Watson , Joff Vansittart, Matt Hanlon, and Andy Salako. John Ugbah, David Everitt and Dominic Feltham were the three substitutes and they replaced Joff Vansittart, Sean Daley and Andy Salako respectively. U's now travel to St. Alban's on Saturday where they will hope to keep up there fine start to the season.
