Sutton's 'bread and butter' side landed butter side down in this clash at Gander Green Lane.Yeovil showed flashes of class which hinted at the reason for their fourth place position. Most of the time however they were content to let Sutton make the running. An early effort by Yeovil resulted in a booking for Ben Smith after he used his hand to try and divert the ball into Sutton's net. After 13 mins Sutton gained a free kick on the edge of the area but the shot went straight at the keeper. Virtually the same scenario in the 26th minute saw Harlow's kick hit the wall. A shot from the ensuing corner was well saved by Pennock. Yeovil ventured out in the 33 minute and showed they were not afraid to shoot from distance when Ben Smith fired in a good effort. The next time Yeovil attacked they were more successful. A splendid through ball found a Yeovil man attended only by Laker. Laker managed to force him wide but the resultant low cross was not held by Howells. This was not cleared and it fell nicely for Smith to bury despite a lunging dive by Berry. Mark Watson having one of his best games this season , showed good close control to turn the defenders on several occasions but He was unable to convert.
The second half was more of the same. Sutton again having a large amount of possession but not really able to press the advantage. Yeovil restricted to long range efforts. Richard Skelly had a couple of good efforts, the first from a long throw , which was hit over the bar . The second from a dave Harlow free kick which again went over. Sutton threw every thing forward in the last minutes of the game. Even Gwynne Berry went forward for the corners, but it was not to be and Yeovil could have extended their lead when they hit the bar from another shot outside the area. Sutton will feel that their efforts warranted at least a draw and Yeovil will be happy to have gained revenge for their home lose earlier in the season.
