Given a run of difficult away games with which to start the Ryman League season, Sutton have been well aware of the importance of making the most of their home games against opposition that promised on paper to be less demanding, and they fulfilled that aim on Tuesday with a third straight home win. As with the Bank Holiday win over Harrow which was similarly convincing, the main damage was done in the second half as three goals eased them clear of promoted Ford, who had their moments before half time but after the break found themselves run ragged. At the heart of most of U's threat was Danny Bolt, who set them on the way in the first half with a free kick impressive even by his standards, and then delivered the three corners that produced the second half goals, but there was more to his performance than that, and the hard work of U's attack in general ensured that the visitors' defence never settled. A good example came after just three minutes when Matt Fowler nipped in front of goalkeeper Chris Harvey to reach a low cross from Bolt on the right, but found the angle just too tight to score. U's had a scare two minutes later when Glenn Poole clipped the outside of the post from a free kick 30 yards out, and they also had to block a Leli Begada effort following another free kick. Just before the half hour mark, though, Bolt brought the game to life in stunning fashion. Ford must have felt that a nudge on Fowler, 35 yards out and fairly central, didn't pose a significant danger, but in this sort of mood Bolt views anything in the opponents' half as a challenge, and when Scott Corbett rolled the free kick to him he sent the ball like a rocket high in to Harvey's top right hand corner. Kevin Hoddy promptly picked up a yellow card for a spiteful hack at Bolt's ankles, but U's couldn't immediately capitalise and after Tom Dunn had saved well from Chris Rose's low shot they conceded an equaliser five minutes before half time. Ben Wood's cross was headed back by Ashley Marsh, and Begada dived to head firmly past Dunn. It might have been worse inside the first minute of the second half as Rose had a shot deflected for a corner, but in the 52nd minute Bolt's corner from the right was headed down by Danny Hodges, and Mark Watson turned to score inside the six yard box. Apart from a speculative Poole shot that was deflected in to the side netting Ford never seriously threatened to come back again and after referee Gavin Hoare had waved aside convincing appeals for a penalty as Hodges was bundled out of the way at another Bolt corner, Watson ended the arguments with a towering far post header from the corner that U's had to make do with as consolation. Corbett was booked for a foul, but that was a minor blemish as U's cruised to victory and thirteen minutes from time another Bolt corner from the left, not one of his best, was claimed comfortably by Harvey, who then inexplicably dropped the ball in to his own net. To be fair it was out of keeping with Harvey's general performance, and he made a good save to deny Watson a hat trick as U's took the opportunity to give all three substitutes a run out in the last ten minutes. Kick off at New Lodge is 3pm. On Tuesday U's are at home to Chesham, who go in to the weekend's games behind Sutton on goal difference, and that game kicks off at 7.30pm, as will all Sutton's home midweek first team games this season. CONTINUED Sutton's reserve team have moved in to a challenging place in the Suburban League Premier Division after two good wins in the past week. On Saturday a Nick Bailey hat trick helped them to a 4-1 win over Thame United. Bailey created the first goal for Glenn Boosey, who the repaid the compliment by putting Bailey through for a second in the 28th minute, but it wasn't until the last couple of minutes that U's superiority counted as two Bailey headers completed his treble, with Thame's consolation coming in the last seconds. On Tuesday U's picked up an excellent win at Walton & Hersham, who were ahead of them prior to the game. After a goalless first half Glenn Boosey volleyed them in front from Aaron Gilbert's cross in the 56th minute, and ten minutes later newcomer Mark Elvin converted another Gilbert pass to make it 2-0. Walton pulled one goal back, but a fine performance from keeper Jamie Ribolla enabled U's to hang on for the win. Meanwhile the youth side recorded a second consecutive 3-0 away win last Wednesday with three second half goals enough to overcome Chipstead. Matt Curtis followed up his previous week's hat trick by putting the ahead nine minutes after the break, and a Charlie Imms penalty two minutes later gave them some breathing space. The two combined again near the end as Curtis crossed for Imms to score his second of the night and round off a convincing victory. Both the reserves and youth team will be looking for cup progress in the coming week. U's reserves entertain Uxbridge on Saturday in the first round of the Suburban League Cup(3pm) while on Wednesday the youth team are at Whyteleafe in the opening round of the Southern Youth League Cup.
