He married Sarah Berresford, daughter of Allen Beresford and Mary Spencer, on Saturday, 28 April 1849 at St Mary and All Saints Parish Church, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Joseph was recorded as "a 33 year old batchelor" and Sarah was recorded as "a 25 year old spinster".

                                                                                              John Mellors and Sarah Berresford appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Brimmington, Derbyshire, John was recorded as "aged 36 years, a blacksmith born in Stavley". Sarah was recorded as "aged 27 years and born in Chesterfield". Joseph Berresford were also recorded in the family.

                                                                                              John Mellors and Sarah Berresford appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 33 Durrant Rd, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, John was recorded as "aged 66 years, a blacksmith at a iron foundrey (sic) and born in Staveley". Sarah was recorded as "aged 55 years and born in Chesterfield".. Anthony Elliott were also recorded in the family.
