I believe that this Churchyard is one of the most unusual and valuable burial grounds of its type in the Country. I do not say this lightly, since several features combine to make this quiet spot almost unique. And special care should be taken to ensure its future preservation. The previous Parish Church was blown up in the Civil War and the old Village deserted. Nothing now remains of the old Church. However, some of its tombstones did survive until the time when Bigland was surveying the tombstone population of Gloucestershire in the late 18th century and these have been included in this survey. The present building, situated about a mile from the old site, was built in the Commonwealth era, bring one of only three or four churches of its type, and was aligned north-south which is echoed in the direction of the internments. An unusual alignment for Christian burials.
Throughout the Country, the earliest churchyard stones of any number existing today, date from the mid 17th century. By then, parish churchyards had been re-used many times, making the burial format very difficult to interpret. Either a particular area was cleared of memorials, levelled or raised ready for new internments, or a grave was dug where there was thought to be space. Also was the fact that in many churchyards, areas would be set aside for particular types of burials. For instance, the south side was valued higher than the north which was in some cases not used at all, in others for the very poor, or undesirables. These customs may well have changed at different times in the same graveyard. Then there was the family plot with sections of the yard divided up amongst the various nearby families. The Smiths would rather rest in peace with the 'Smiths' rather than with the Proverbial 'Jones', while the between ground was filled in with people related to nobody in particular. All this confusing material makes the attempt to draw plans of burial positions complex: also, on which side of the headstone is the burial in relation to the inscription; and anyway is the stone your looking at still in its original position? Most of the above problems do not exist at St. Lawrence's. The graveyard is clearly still governed by the same layout put down when the Church was built in the 17th century, and it has been possible to get a good idea how Taynton's early Sextons buried the dead, apparently without any plan to work from, presumably there must have been an occasional digging up of an ancestor! The grave layout at Taynton, particularly so when on paper, displays a high degree of planning. The graves are aligned north-south, and set in 15 rows. All headstones except the later (mid Victorian onwards), display the habit of inscribing the stones side away from the grave. The headstones in the attached new burial ground are inscribed grave side. There is an extraordinary large number of legible seventeenth century stones with readable epitaphs and verses. The Authors of which we have affectionately styled "The Taynton Poets." Many of the epitaphs were under the turf and much digging was needed to bring some remarkably well preserved carving to light, one 17th century stone had traces of black paint in the letters. There is also a noticeable grouping of stones belonging to particular families. It should be pointed out that the ledgers set in the path either side of the porch may not be in their original positions.
The completed survey has been matched against and added to by two previous lists: that of Bigland's Monumental Inscriptions of Gloucestershire 1791 (added to in the 19th century); and Rudder's History of Gloucestershire 1779. As stated above, Bigland also included several inscriptions from the old pre Civil War churchyard, which is of great value owing to their age, and that they apparently no longer exist. These have also been included. The Churchyard remains undamaged and unspoilt and long may it remain so.
Extract supplied by Douglas Parker of Tibberton in 1992 copied from GRO document reference P326 CW 3/1 dated 3 Feb. 1827 with plan of church dated 1825. as altered and repaired. "William Charles Holder unlawfully removed several flat stones and thirty head stones in the Churchyard of the said Parish Church. (Taynton) and fixed them in a different situation to where they were before placed."
Addenda: In 1996 two memorials were located in a sunken garden at Taynton House and recorded by Don Sherratt and Doug Parker. The memorials were moved from Taynton Parish Church in 1824/5 by William Charles Holder (Churchwarden) along with at least one other tombstone thought to be currently standing upright against the north east face of the church and to the Astman family. The memorials are numbered 329 & 330. Julian Rawes 1997

BIGLAND INSCRIPTIONS OLD CHURCH MEMORIALS
Description of the old village given by Bigland:
"The site of the old Church is on the side of an old disused Lane from the Newent Road. It is moated round, and is disclosed by its Yew Tree, and by a portion of a Tomb serving for the stepping stone of a stile by it. The inscribed stones are all over grown with grass. It is glebe Land, but an old half Timber thatched Cottage called the old Church House in the Inclosure, which survived the destruction of the Church, is Lay property." At least one of the memorials, and the Old Church House survived into the 20th century.
